Deep Silver pulls developer Yager from Dead Island 2

Dead Island 2's development is apparently still not going the way publisher Deep Silver has hoped, so developer Yager has been taken off the project.

There's been an interesting development in regards to Dead Island 2's ongoing development. It now appears that publisher Deep Silver and developer Yager have gone their separate ways, with the developer now apparently off the project.

"With Dead Island 2, Deep Silver has always been dedicated to delivering the sequel that Dead Island fans deserve," reads the official publisher statement. "After careful consideration, today we announce the decision to part ways with development partner Yager."

This comes less than three months after Deep Silver delayed the game until 2016. The publisher statement at the time did not seem particularly positive, alluding to goals that were not met and putting the onus on Yager to complete the project.

Deep Silver is promising to continue "working towards bringing our vision of Dead Island 2 to life" and is promising information at a later date. Whether that plan includes passing off the game to an entirely new developer or one of the dev studios currently under the Deep Silver umbrella remains to be seen.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

I was under the impression that we got Dying Light because they couldn't do another Dead Island game.

Yeah after playing DL I didn't really care about DI2 any more, and I played the shit out of the original and Riptide.

I thought the team behind Dead Island (the first game) also did Dying Light, if true then keep the games where they belong and let them finish up DI2

Before these subthreads go any further.

Techland = Dead Island, Dead Island: Riptyde, and Dying Light
Yager = Dead Island 2 (until today)

I thought that as well. I don't think they can make a Dead Island that is better than Dying Light.

100% this ^^^ I even tweeted that to them :)

Shit I never even knew another team was working on it I was like "WTF?"

Man if Techland takes the ball that be amazing, god I hope so.

Good thing the game is not canceled hey.

Isn't going to happen, Techland split from Deep silver and the Dead island franchise, and im sure they would have reasons for that.
So it would be a totally dumb move after they made the great game Dying light is, to go and make a game for the "competition". Although i doubt the next Dead island game would have any chance of competing with Dying light (or a possible sequel). That is, if they even manage to ship the Dead island 2 game.

They weren't offered fair terms so they left and made Dying Light for WB instead. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-09-11-why-isnt-dead-island-1-developer-techland-making-the-sequel

One of my foolish worries is that down the road publishers will shop around for the lowest bidding developer for a game.

Was about to say what happened to Techland, then realized they did dying light.

It's important to keep in mind that Dead Island 1 was announced way back in 2007. Deep Silver's Homefront game has gone dark for over a year. It'll be interesting to see what happens here.

I'm kind of interested in seeing what Volition would do with Dead Island. They got to be bored of Saints Row at this point.

If Gat out of Hell is any indication, I feel like they've hit their Saints Row limit for one lifetime.

I would love for them to take a break, but Deep Silver has no qualms releasing spin-offs, remasters and sequels. I would be seriously surprised if Volition weren't working on Saints Row 5. I hope they're not.
