Soft Body challenges players to paint the world while dodging bullets

Soft Body is a game with an artistic premise, challenging players to paint the world. If that sounds too easy, there are also a lot of bullets to dodge.

Bringing life to a vibrant world of colors is a satisfying idea, but hardly a new one. So how does one give this concept a shot in the arm? How about bullets and lots of them? That's the premise behind the upcoming Soft Body, a new indie effort from solo developer Zeke Virant.

"Inspired by the simplicity and joy of twin-stick shooters and other arcade games, players take control of two beautiful, gooey snakes at the same time (one with each analog stick)," Virant said on PlayStation.Blog. "Together, you use the snakes to paint the world, which continually changes around you, while dodging bullets and popping enemies. Both soothing and tense, Soft Body combines the challenge and twitchy fun of quick-restart action games with a smooth, meditative aesthetic."

The game will feature two difficulties. For the Soft Mode difficulty, players will focus on dragging around one snake along the overhead 2D plane, filling in boxes and painting blank areas of the world. Those seeking a greater challenge can switch to Hard Mode, which will see players manage twin snakes, one with each analog stick. Losing a single snake in this mode will end the game.

Soft Body will release on PS4 and Vita later this year. For more, check out the trailer below.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
