Overwatch salutes Zarya with 12 minutes of gameplay

Blizzard's Russian warrrior woman is credit to team, as evidenced by 12 more minutes of Overwatch gameplay.

There is no greater force for pure FPS mayhem than Team Fortress 2's Heavy, the burly symbol for Russian manliness. But he will no longer be the only Soviet brute gracing the genre. Blizzard has its own Russian heavy hitter for Overwatch, the hulking warrior woman known as Zarya.

Zarya will hit the battlefield with her Particle Cannon, which can be used as a short-range beam and as an explosive charge. Meanwhile, her Particle Barrier will keep her protected from harm, while also using enemy blasts to power up her weapon. The Projected Barrier can expand further to protect teammates, allowing her to polish off her foes with the Graviton Surge, a massive gravity bomb that sucks in any nearby enemies.

Zarya can be seen in the clip below doing battle in Egypt, doling out massive damage and racking up a huge kill streak over the course of 12 minutes. Overwatch will go into beta later this year, with sign-ups available now on Battle.net.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
