E3 2015: Earthbound Beginnings announced for Wii U; will release tonight

Even Earthbound/Mother fans couldn't have seen this one coming, as more Earthbound is on its way to Wii U.

Prior to the Nintendo World Championships, Nintendo dropped a bombshell on viewers. A new Earthbound is on its way and it will go by the name Earthbound Beginnings. Well, it'll certainly be new to North American users, as it's actually the original Mother, which was only released in Japan on Famicom.

Earthbound Beginnings was originally released as Mother 1 in 1989 overseas, telling the origin story of Ness and the world of Onett. The trailer below will do a better job explaining the plot. The most pivotal piece of information here is that this classic RPG will hit the Wii U Virtual Console tonight at 6PM ET... which is right now!

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Desperate Nintendo is the best Nintendo.

"Fuck, we're losing mindshare to the other consoles, especially with older gamers who have known us the longest. How do we fix this?"

"We could do another one of those championships like we did in the 80's..."

      "Done. Next?"

"You know we've been catching shit for a long time because we don't do anything with the Mother series. We only released one of the games in the USA."

      "How many are there?"

"Three. And back in the 90's we localized one of the other two but never released it."

"Get it on the store asap. What's next?"

(Hopefully something about Metroid came next)

Preface by saying I'm a Nintendo whore so I'm actually quite for this maneuver.

Nintendo simply put would not acknowledge the Mother series for the longest time. And during the N64/Wii eras (and to a lesser extent the GC) they didn't feel the need to make the hardcore fans happy. This is why the VC on the Wii was so frustrating - they had all these awesome games and the ones that got released were often shitty.

But the Wii U has been struggling from the word go. So the once-cocky Nintendo is doing all kinds of things they wouldn't have done before (partly because the mothership in Japan wouldn't allow it before). Stuff like the Nintendo World Championships. Stuff like the humble bundle thing from a few weeks ago. Stuff like releasing Earthbound on the VC, and now putting out the localized-but-never-released NES version. Stuff like acknowledging the Virtual Boy ever existed.

And if I'm not mistaken, they've had Smash characters without tie-ins before, maybe even from Earthbound. Hell, Samus Aran was in the very first N64 Smash Bros. and the N64 never even had a Metroid game.

What I'm saying is Nintendo has been holding out on the diehard fans for a long time now and now that they're trying to move Wii U units they're pulling out all the stops. And it's great.

And maybe if this sells well we can get a translated port of Mother 3. The Wii U already has GBA on its VC.

That's cool of them but I don't actually want to play Mother 1. Bring us Mother 3!
