Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi asked and Kickstarter answered. Igarashi’s next project, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, is now the most funded game on Kickstarter, passing up the RPG, Torment: Tides of Numenera, by raising more than $4.3 million. Bloodstained raised more than $1 million in the first 24 hours and is just short of its $5 million goal.

“Many years have passed, but it’s time we meet again. With your help, I hope to create a new game built on some of the classic gaming principles my works are known for,” Igarashi said on Bloodstained’s Kickstarter page.

The new title is not an official Castlevania game, but will bear many elements that made classics like Symphony of the Night so popular. Bloodstained is described as a 2D “exploration-focused, side scrolling platformer bearing RPG and crafting elements.”

The game stars an all-new protagonist, Miriam, an orphan scarred by a curse that crystalizes her skin. Players will defeat bosses to learn new abilities to make their way through a through an expansive demon-infested castle that is bigger than any of the other maps from previous Igavania titles.

Fans of the Castlevania series will be happy to know Robbie Belegrade will reprise his role from Symphony of the Night as Alucard will be making a cameo appearance. His talents are joined by David Hayter, who is known for his work as Solid Snake in the Metal Gear series. His voice will be given to Gebel, the villain who summons the castle and plots the destruction of mankind, as well as finding how to best manipulate Miriam to achieve his dark goals.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is expected to launch for PC Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Wii U, and Vita in spring 2017. Gamers looking to score a special Kickstarter copy can pledge $28 for a digital version or $60 for a hard copy before June 12.
