Nintendo announced they will finally enter the realm of smartphone game creation.

Nintendo announced they’ve entered into a "business and capital alliance" with Japanese online giant, DeNA. As a result, there will be a number of new games for both smartphones and tablets that will not only use some of Nintendo’s most iconic characters, but also its worlds, too.

Thankfully, neither Nintendo nor DeNA are interested in porting games specifically created for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Instead, the games will be completely original and will be optimized for smart device functionality. Nintendo also points out all Nintendo IP will be eligible for “development and exploration.” So, yes - a new Elite Beat Agents is totally possible!

Today’s announcement also included the mention of a partnership between Nintendo and DeNA to develop an online membership service that will be accessible from smart devices, PC, and Nintendo systems. The membership service is expected to launch in fall of 2015 and will be built on DeNA’s “extensive experience” and capabilities in the online membership services.

That may very well explain the closure of Club Nintendo.
