The World Ends With You: Solo Remix pulled from App Store [Update: Square responds]

A compatability fix for iOS 8 has proven far tougher than Square Enix anticipated, so the publisher has removed The World Ends With You: Solo Remix from the App Store entirely. (Update: Square has responded.)

Update: Square Enix has issued the following statement to Shacknews regarding this matter.

"Upon examining the impact of recent iOS updates to the title, we determined that the affected areas were greater than originally assumed. We were working to address this matter, however, the title has been regrettably pulled from the Store. Square Enix is actively working with all related parties to make available the software update; however at this time, we are unable to communicate a clear and adequate timeline. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to determine a solution."

Furthermore, Square Enix is encouraging customers to reach out to Apple for refund inquiries, as they handle all transactions via the App Store.

Original story: Following up on a story from a couple of weeks ago, it looks like the problems plaguing the iOS version of The World Ends With You were bigger than Square Enix expected. After previously promising to address game-breaking issues with iOS 8, Square has ultimately decided to pull the game from the App Store entirely.

Once again, the folks at Touch Arcade are on top of this story, observing that the game had been quietly pulled from the App Store late last week. A notice has gone up on the Square Enix support page, with a statement reading, "We are actively working with all related parties to make the service available again; however, we are as yet unable to inform you of any clear and definite timeline." In the meantime, the app will remain usable (assuming you don't have iOS 8, of course), but redownloads will not be supported. So if you delete the app at any point, it's gone until such time as the game returns to iTunes.

The World Ends With You: Solo Remix was originally priced at a staggering $19.99 on iPad and $17.99 on iPhone, making it quite the expensive investment. Shacknews has reached out to Square Enix for comment, but it appears that anyone with this game in their library will have to go through the wringer for a little while longer. Meanwhile, the Android version of the game has no such issues and remains available on the Google Play store.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

As funny as it is, when you really look at it, that really is the only thing they can say. Apple's in charge of the App Store, Apple handles all transactions, the money goes straight to Apple, so it only makes sense that Apple handles refunds.

All in all, this is an ugly situation, but I'm happy Square said SOMETHING, because they could just as easily have stuck their heads in the sand.

Guess this means it'll probably be even longer before Square bothers to get Chrono Trigger working with Android Lollipop. Does Square just suck that badly at making mobile games? Seems like they have a lot of trouble with it.

It's not just mobile games, but all RPG games in general, it seems. FFXIV before the A Realm Reborn remake came out was a shitfest mess, and all the other recent games in the FF series has been declining in popularity quickly. It's like they've forgotten how to make a good RPG now.
