Shadow of Mordor's 'The Bright Lord' DLC detailed

Monolith explains the combat and balance changes for the upcoming DLC that will let you step into the role of the ring-maker himself.

Shadow of Mordor is getting another piece of downloadable content that will let you play as a supporting character, Monolith announced today. This time, you'll step into the skinny boots of Celebrimbor, the Elven Lord who forged the Rings of Power and inadvertently helped Sauron.

The new campaign will last 10 missions, and focus on Celebrimbor using his own Ring of Power to go toe-to-toe with Sauron. Appropriately enough, that means you'll be able to use the One Ring to become invisible, and shoot arrows extra-fast. As elves have been known to do. Since this is during the height of Sauron's power grab, you'll face off against a more powerful Elite Orc Army, complete with new abilities. It will also include a Challenge Mode with harder enemies and Celebrimbor's abilities, and a Celebrimbor skin for the main campaign.

Celebrimbor will also have more domination options. He'll be able to dominate an area-of-effect to hit several Orcs at once, and he can Shadow Brand to teleport directly into a domination. Plus, using the One Ring, he can dominate enemies while invisible, and then regain health by sacrificing his followers. In the final battle, though, Sauron can turn your own followers back against you. Monolith's Michael de Plater told Shacknews that Warchiefs and Nemesis enemies have been rebalanced so their combinations of abilities are more varied.

"The enemies are significantly more powerful, there’s many more of them, and some combinations of abilities from your ability tree are also limited," Monolith's Michael de Plater told Shacknews. "To give a specific example, in the original game you could double your hit counter, not reset your hit counter when you got hit and reduce the hit counter threshold for special abilities. This made you ridiculously powerful once the ability tree was maxxed out. Now you can lower the hit counter, but not stack this with the other abilities."

I kinda liked being a bad ass. I earned it and I wanted to run through Mordor killing fools. Now I got nerferd?! Guess I'll skip this then.

I assume they mean just for when you play Celebrimbor. The balance is that he has other abilities, like invis, so it should get balanced out. 'Should' being the operative word here.

Truth be told, the reduced combo counter + take one hit without reducing it completely trivialized the combat IMO. It's not going to deter me from picking this up.

I wonder how they're going to follow up SoM once they're done with the DLC.

There are new job posting listed last week. At least I assume they're new. Could mean they're about to start production on whatever that will be. We might hear something at GDC in 2 weeks.

        I posted this before:

The game was all about the orcs. Setting them up, terrorizing them, pitting them against one another, and so on. I don't care about being some ranger-ghost. That was utterly irrelevant to my enjoyment of this game. Ratbag was the best part of the game.

I want to be Ratbag, next time. Or someone like him. I want to be some low down, dirty, ambition scumbag with a heart of ice and a severed head for a hat. I want to climb the ranks, over everyone's dead bodies if necessary, until I'm King Troll of Orc Mountain.

I don't need terrible ghost powers. All I need is a dull axe, a strong arm, and an absolute lack of morals.
