'Several thousand' Hearthstone bots receive Blizzard's banhammer

Blizzard has taken some aggressive measures against bots playing in Hearthstone.

Blizzard is finally doing something about the ongoing bots problem in its popular online collectible card battling game, Hearthstone.

The company announced in a new Battle.net blog they have recently banned “several thousand” Hearthstone accounts that were allegeded bots, and the banning of these particular accounts won't be lifted “until 2015.”

“We’re committed to creating a fun and rewarding environment for our players, and we will continue to closely monitor activities within Hearthstone and take appropriate action against cheating in any form, as outlined in our Terms of Use,” Blizzard stated in the post. “From this point on, accounts found to be cheating will be permanently closed without warning.”

Whether or not this response has anything to do with our recent feature highlighting the problem with bots in Hearthstone is certainly debatable, but, I for one think it probably helped a little bit.

Not a surprise, this is how Blizzard do. Gather data, then wipe them (mostly) out.

Disappointing that it was only for a few months ban

A little, yes, but this is pretty clearly meant as a warning shot. They say that the next bans will be permanent, so this is their way of jolting botters out of their comfort zone to let them know they mean business.

It would be nice if they could take away the ill-gotten gains, though. Maybe not individual cards because it would be hard to detect what was paid for and what wasn't, but maybe just reset their gold hero portrait progress.

which the banning of these particular accoutns will be lifted “until 2015.”

I think that should be 'won't be lifted' and accounts, retrospectively.

Thanks for the heads up! I think Steve corrected it for me. Hell of a guy, that Steve.

Why did it take so long? The game has been shit for ages due to bots. And I log into D3 and get spammed with friend requests from names like awfhaowfhawf and all I see in the chat is gold selling.

How hard is it to put a filter in that blocks gold selling website urls from the chat? Blizzard are either shit at banning people or they just don't care.

that's a pretty weak ban. they keep everything and just lose access for a couple of months on that account

They're only suspended though and will keep all gold and cards they've earned through botting.
