Chatty Twitch Highlights 31: Half-Life 2 on Oculus Rift and more

Now with 100% more dognose!

This has actually been one of the more active weeks for Chatty posters on Twitch, making narrowing down this week's selections more difficult than expected. There were a number of solid clips to choose from, ranging from games both old and new, as well as from platforms both present and future.

So at the end of the day, I ultimately decided on sergeon playing Half-Life 2 with the Oculus Rift, taking a trip back in time with dael and Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, and orangepylon racing against time in Left 4 Dead 2 with his survival party of RomSteady, Maddog_Delphi97, and the living legend known as dognose.

Here's a compilation of some of the best Shacknews Twitch highlights for the week of August 23, 2014.

Warning: Some clips may contain NSFW language.

Half-Life 2

The Chatty community is still waiting for the inevitable reveal for Half-Life 3, which I hear will happen any day now!

But while they wait (and wait...and wait...), sergeon is playing through the latest hotness in games: the Oculus Rift VR headset. And there's no better way to test out the Oculus Rift than by trying out one of the early stages of Half-Life 2. Watch as he records his movement, side-by-side with the in-game footage that sees him taking cover from enemy gunfire.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay

Chatty's dael is taking viewers on another trip back through the annals of history, playing through 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. The game was received very well, shocking anyone that saw Vin Diesel sleepwalk his way through the films, marking this as a rare instance of the video game being better than the source material. Watch dael play through the game's opening minutes below.

Left 4 Dead 2

Our hardened group of Chatty survivors have only 90 seconds to make it to the end of the bridge! We see the action through the eyes of orangepylon, as he leads his team of RomSteady, Maddog_Delphi97, and the legendary dognose. And by "leads," I mean, of course, "dies within ten seconds."

Enjoy this clip and we'll be back next week with a whole new round of highlights!

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

In that Left 4 Dead 2 clip, we're playing with the Shack Mutations ( http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=197066937 ) that our mafia don Romsteady works on. If you like L4D2's gameplay but wish it was more carefully balanced or difficult, then pick some other mod because these ones turn you into some kind of anime character on PCP.

Butcher Bay is old but still holds up. What's interesting about it is that you can see elements from all over in that game, shooters, stealth, 3rd and 1st person, dialog trees, quests and a hint of factional NPC systems. Putting all that in one game is really hard but it does a good job of all that, surprisingly. I'm about 3/4 way through, will finish after the weekend when I have more time.

Wormslayer, the HL2 VR mod author, fixed some of the glitches in a new patch and it works a lot better now!!
