The Secret World is now two years old and Funcom is celebrating with a massive amount of new content, including bonuses and an all-new boss. On top of the update, which is set to kick off today, the studio is also offering some special recruiting incentives for current players to help cover their cost of membership.

The Secret World anniversary event will offer double Ability Points for all players, which will stack with the effects of various items. The update will also include some story-based content, with four new action missions and one investigation mission. A giant Golem will also be rampaging across Tokyo, in case anyone wants to take it down for some additional loot.

Players also have the chance to pull in a free month of membership for each new referral. Each current member will receive 10 invite keys, which equals ten potential months of extra perks, like early access to new content and item store discounts. Of course, the game is free-to-play beyond its initial upfront retail price, so if you already own the game, you're free to jump back in at any time.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

This was probably my favorite "different" MMO, it's too bad I didn't have time to get more into it. I highly recommend it for people looking for something a bit different though.

Loved the setting, hated the combat.

Agreed. If this game had tighter combat and was more single-player focused (co-op being recommended) I would probably be loving it a lot more.

Yeah, honestly, I wasn't too into the combat, but I agree that the setting was something nice and different.

count me in that too. Fantastic setting, terrible execution. The hardest thing I found was the non-level type idea. I would try and kill something and either kill it in one shot or die a horrible death without making a dint in it. Was really hard to know what I was supposed to be killing. Maybe thats just me and I am too used to the norm levelling system in an MMORPG

I can agree that the progression in the game in terms of creatures and gear/abilities is more confusing without levels... but it's worth figuring out! Here are a few tips that might make it easier if any of you want to try again:

All missions are rated for difficulty, if you try one that is too hard or too easy, see what it was rated and try a harder or easier one. Those ratings scale as you grow in power so if 'Hard' feels just right for you seek out missions at that difficulty level.

Your gear essentially IS your level. That means you have control over your level, if you find a mission that is too easy and you want more of a challenge, but on lower level gear and see if you have the skill to do the mission then! If a mission is too hard come back to it when you have better gear.

You have tremendous freedom in creating a 'Deck' (ie build or custom class) for yourself... but doing it is complicated, don't hesitate to look up a good one or ask on the forums. The combat system is deep, complex and satisfying... but it's kind of impenetrable for newcomers. Luckily the theorycrafters in the forums will just love to help you figure it out.

With regards to the combat being bad when you tried it... It has improved a lot in subtle ways due to lots of combat animation changes, server side lag fixes, and skill balancing... so it feels more solid and less 'floaty' than it did at launch... but it's still essentially the same system. And in reality it's very similar to the GW2 combat or even WildStar.

In the last 2 years there have been 11 story updates. 9 were 'Issues' and 2 were 'Side Stories' and the story just keeps getting better and the devs just keep getting better at making unique interesting missions. In the new Tokyo Zone that launched you will find virtually NO standard missions... everything is unique and tied to the story, there is still nothing else out there that comes close to this game in that respect.

To be clear, the first 5 updates are free and the rest are paid DLC, that's just how the game works, no monthly subscription but once you complete the launch content you pay for each additional chapter once, it's around $10 per issue. But each issue is a lovingly put together chunk of story and gameplay and well worth the cost in my experience.
