Ultra Street Fighter 4 video explains new mechanics

Red Focus? Delayed wakeup? What do these terms even mean? Fortunately for newbies, Capcom has released a new Ultra Street Fighter 4 video that will hopefully explain these ideas in a way that makes sense for everyone.

Not everyone is a hardcore fighting game fanatic, so terms like "Red Focus" and "delayed wakeup" will likely fly right over the heads of casual players looking to pick up Ultra Street Fighter 4 for the first time. Fortunately, Capcom offers up a new video to helpfully explain these concepts to amateurs and newcomers, hopefully in terms that are understandable to everyone.

Capcom's Peter 'Combofiend' Rosas explains Red Focus and how its mainly used as a defensive tool, similar to what parries did in the Street Fighter 3 series. If used correctly, it can completely take every hit of an opponent's Ultra combo for zero damage.

Rosas then explains the idea of delayed wakeup, which allows players to delay their standing movement off a hard knockdown. The mechanic was added in mainly to prevent frustrating cross-up moves and also to help fend off pesky unblockable combos.

The full explanation can be found in the video below. Ultra Street Fighter 4 is out now on Xbox 360 and PS3 as a digital upgrade and will release to retail outlets and PC in August.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

He mentions that using old versions of characters (pre-ultra) won't let you use choose double ultras, but does that also exclude you from using red focus and delayed wakeups in a game?

If they're old versions (as in, Arcade Edition 2012 or earlier) of the characters, they will not have Red Focus or delayed wakeups. They will be just as they were in their original versions.

Okay, thanks. Wish they made that clear but I guess you'd figure it out eventually by playing the game.

I wasn't sure if something like delayed wakeups were an across the board adjustment to the fighting engine or character specific tweaks just for the ultra version select.
