Yesterday, Amazon snatched up Double Helix, developer of Killer Instinct for Xbox One. The free-to-play fighting game was due to have an extensive amount of post-launch DLC support, including the potential for a "season two" of DLC. What happens now that Double Helix is no longer aligned with Microsoft?

According to Microsoft, the company will be working with a new developer for future updates on the franchise. "We have thoroughly enjoyed working with Double Helix and wish them success in their next endeavor," a Microsoft spokesperson told Polygon. "We want all of our loyal fans to know that the Killer Instinct team at Microsoft is not changing and that the franchise will remain with Microsoft Studios. We remain dedicated to delivering a great experience and plan to announce our new development partner soon. We're excited about the future of this popular franchise."

So I guess the next Killer Instinct will have us fighting the forerunners?

I'm still shocked that Microsoft didn't buy them first. Given their work on Killer Instinct and Strider, I would have thought those games were evidence enough that they had the kind of raw talent that Microsoft needs right now. And with Black Tusk now working on a new Gears of War game, instead of new IP, it seems a shame that another studio with great potential has been allowed to slip through Microsoft's fingers.

Even worse, I don't even want to imagine what kind of drivel Double Helix will end up having to work on now that Amazon owns them lock, stock and barrel.

Has amazon created other games before? Why would Double Helix be working on drivel? It could be part of a larger plan for amazon to go into publishing. In my experience Amazon has some great ideas so I would at least give them the benefit of the doubt before we start dismissing their games.

For all we know Amazon could be excited about a new IP that Double Helix is developing.

It's really not fear of Amazon but a fear of that they will want to develop on an Android platform.

If they are publishing games and are open to any platform, it's probably going to be a really good thing to happen to gaming.

Reflexive has been releasing games on WiiWare over the last few years, and they were purchased by Amazon back in 2008.

Yes but that is 2008. If the rumors are true that they are developing a console, it will be probably the worst thing for their entire gaming division.

I am not saying Amazon buying studios is a bad thing but if they are honestly making an android console, it's definitely a bad thing for all of their studios.
