Final Fantasy 14 birthing on PS4 on April 14

Square Enix had said that Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn would launch on PlayStation 4 in the month of April and gosh, it really meant it. Over the weekend, the publisher pinned its revamped MMORPG down to an April 14 launch. People who already own the MMORPG on PS3 will be able to transfer their account over to PS4, but it'll be permanent with no undosies.

Anyone who wants to play FF14 on both PS3 and PS4, for whatever reason, will need to buy a second, separate account--it won't support cross-version accounts. Pre-orders will open today on a $40 Standard Edition and $80 Collector's Edition. The CE packs an art book, soundtrack CD, art cards, a movie disc telling backstory, and in-game items including a special mount and minions. A download version of the CE will also be up for pre-order, minus the shiny physical objects, for $60. Pre-ordering either gets players a Mog Cap to wear and a Cait Sith Doll minion, along with early access to the game from April 11. A beta for all PlayStation 4 owners will begin on February 22. At the end of October, two months after relaunching as A Realm Reborn, Final Fantasy XIV had 1.5 million subscribers across PC and PlayStation 3.
