Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition updates last year's game with fancy new visuals targeting the next-gen consoles. However, what if one version were more definitive than the other? An early report suggests that the PS4 version outperforms the Xbox One version by reaching 60 frames per second on a more consistent basis.

This wouldn't be the first time a multiplatform game has performed better on PS4 than Xbox One, and may only be the latest indication that Xbox One is indeed less beefy than its competitor.

Square Enix told us that "both platforms offer the same outstanding Tomb Raider experience. Delivering the core Tomb Raider gameplay at native 1080p and running at 30fps was always our primary goal given the type of experience Tomb Raider is and the exploration we want players to do. Anything beyond 30fps for this version is gravy."

The official comment doesn't dispel the possibility that one version may perform better than the other. However, if there are any disparities in performance between the two, it's likely gamers will want the version that offers the most gravy.

3rd person perspective games don't need 60fps to feel fluid. I would say though that the 40's is a much better target, however for systems with less adaptive V-Sync systems to remove tearing, 30 would be a target. With adaptive V-Sync, then 45 for 3rd person is the sweet spot.

I disagree, the last one I played that was capped was Alice Madness Returned and at 30fps is was horrible. 3rd person games often involve a lot of spinning the camera around and that's what benefits the most from 60+ fps.

*sigh* I currently only own an Xbone and not a PS4 and I want to buy this game. 30 fps is quite low. I bet Square are bribed by Microsoft to withhold details on how much faster the PS4 version. If it's 40+ I'll buy a PS4 I guess.

This is how it's going to be for the next 7 years. Their arcitecture is the same, but the PS4 has more power. 99% of the time it will look and perform better.

And if you're willing to drop $400 for better framerates you might as well just build a HTPC.

i played the game on a ps3 and thought it both looked great and played well. that was probably 30fps max. if you only have a One I'm sure you will still have a great time with the game.

I was going to point out that this will be the smoothest running console version of any 3rd person Tomb Raider game and yet some still complain. It will look gorgeous while pushing better framerates than the first Tomb Raider and its 20 polygons could.

If a game consistently runs at 30fps, your eyes adjust to it. You only notice frame rate hiccups when they run high and then drop below the average. Also, don't buy the PS4 just for an updated Tomb Raider, buy it for infamous, Uncharted, or any of the many unannounced games that will likely amaze us. The Xbox One is great in its own right(shitty interface not-withstanding), but don't let graphics dictate what you play.

There's a reason indie games have become so popular, they may not look as good as triple-A tiles, but they tend to focus on gameplay mechanics above all else.

"beyond" I don't know about that. I can't stand a game that doesn't have consistent framerate. 30 or 60, nothing in between please.

So both versions do 60fps but the PS4 does it more consistently. They are trying to not drop below 30fps on both platforms. Not too bad to have the minimum be 30fps IMO.

So now "Definitive Edition" means inferior? You can get the game for PC on the cheap and it will crush the consoles frame rate. PC Master Race!

No subsurface scattering and other tweaks to Lara's model, which is disappointing. They would have to patch that into the PC version and it doesn't look like they will. I hope this isn't a trend.

Yeah I was hoping they were going to patch the PC version but it doesn't sound like it. Oh well I did already finish the game so I don't plan on playing it all that much more! If it's actually much better looking maybe I'll pick up the PS4 version when it's much cheaper!

I suspect they will, eventually. Just not until they've sold through on "next-gen" (hah!) consoles.

Will they release the 'definitive edition' on the PC? Cos if they do you'll end up picking it up for a fiver while the price on consoles remains incredibly high for months.

I played through it over the holidays on my PS3, ran perfectly fine. I was very impressed with the way it looked too. Going beyond 30fps is intriguing though
