Many online games feature regular rapid updates. Sony Online Entertainment is planning on keeping up with the Jones with PlanetSide 2, promising weekly updates for the game every Wednesday, starting January 15. Creative director Matt Higby says the change is to help expedite fixes, without compromising larger content updates.

"[Weekly updates] means we'll be more rapidly respond to bugs & balance issues in the game without having to rely on hotfixes as much," Higby explains on the PlanetSide 2 forums. "We'll also be able to release new content more frequently and consistently. Each individual update will be smaller and more focused, with fewer moving parts that can break, which we hope will greatly decrease the number of bugs being introduced when we update. This doesn't mean that we're not still working on bigger features and larger content pieces, we definitely are and they'll be slotted into the weekly schedule as they're ready to be released."

Higby notes that the first of the weekly updates will be smaller than average, as the team acclimates itself to its new schedule and new development processes.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
