Far Cry Compilation celebrates series' 10th anniversary

Far Cry Compilation will celebrate Far Cry's 10th anniversary by bringing Far Cry 2, Far Cry 3, and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon to PS3 owners on one single disc.

It's been ten years since the Far Cry series first debuted. Where does the time go? Feels like just yesterday I was just killing my first boar. But yes, ten years have indeed passed and Ubisoft is celebrating with a special PlayStation 3-exclusive anniversary pack called the Far Cry Compilation, which will include three of the series' best games.

Far Cry Compilation will collect Far Cry 2, Far Cry 3, and the '80s-riffic Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon on a single disc. All three games will come with their respective single-player, multiplayer, and co-op modes intact, though they will not include any DLC packs. Ubi says the version of Far Cry 2 included here is a "full digital re-master," whatever that means.

The Far Cry Compilation will arrive in stores on February 11, priced at $39.99.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Shame Far Cry 1 isn't in that bundle, that holds up pretty damn well IMO.

It's still the best in the series. So many great gameplay moments.

Like being endlessly chased through forced checkpoints and your guns turning to dust after 2 or 3 mags also the vast brown color palette is truly unforgettable while it also had the worst Ai of the series as well.

Fast travel, use rivers, buy guns from shops. The AI was fine and being able to attack missions without being forced into small zones is what makes it so much better than 3.

Agreed. I loved FC2. The rivers were the highways and sneak attacks blowing up in your face lead to some epic gun battles.

Yeah, no. FC3 AI is visibly dumber. In FC2, *individuals* would try to flank you. In FC3, the reinforcements coming in will try to flank, unless you DISPLAAAACE before they arrive, but the individuals either stay in cover or charge directly at you.

Like having to trek halfway back across the map after every mission for ammo, only to be interrupted 95% of the way back to your objective with a malaria attack which forces you on an un-fun 20 minute detour in search of medicine? Yeah. No.

I feel sorry for people like you that never got into it. It took me a little while to get used to but once it clicked, it was was of the most engrossing games I've ever played.

I put like 60 hours into it. I would have finished it if not for the checkpoints. The continuously respawning, never stop chasing you, spot you from 1/2 mile out, never have anything cool, lazy to code, cookie-cutter-esque checkpoints. Those broke my spirit. If I could have blown through one at 70 mph and have them take some pot shots at me, but give no real pursuit? Yep. Awesome game.

But the fact that even if I meticulously clear every bad guy from end-to-end, loot everything, and blow shit up, I can look forward to the SAME EXACT ENCOUNTER IF I WANDER MORE THAN 50 FEET FROM THE CHECKPOINT. It doesn't even wait for a full in-game day! Ugh.

You could blow through checkpoints if you wanted to. I never found them a chore though. really. I looked at it like Mad Max: The Game. When someone gave chase I would do a one eighty, slip into gunner position and blow them away. If I didn't want to be hassled by checkpoints I'd fast travel or take rivers since it was even easier to outrun people giving chase on rivers and the chases happened less frequently. I felt like I was alone in a harsh environment and loved that I had to fend for myself.

The gunplay was so great too. Guys flanking you, running from cover to cover, sliding behind things to dodge bullets. Every once in a while everything went south and you needed to recover and think on the fly. Such a rewarding game.

Why didn't you go get pills when you heard there was only one left when you swallowed the next to last one? That's YOUR fault. And how are you running out of ammo? Every checkpoint has Ammo. Even if you have to take it off someone.

Yeah, and there was always the Gun Shop or every other little shack / lean-to or whatever you ran across. You could find ammo everywhere if you looked for it.

Africa for me was THE LAND OF FREE CARS AND AMMO. :D

See, I never had a problem with the malaria. Every time you took a pill, the bottle showed you roughly how many you had left, and when you got to the last one you still had hours to do a passport mission before you even started to get sick.

No. I really REALLY liked Far Cry 2, but FC3 is better in every way except dumber AI, so far. They HAVE made the same mistake the later Jedi Knight games made, by giving you the Uber Weapon right away (light saber or Takedown), so you don't really HAVE to find other weapons.

The HUD in general was terrible in FC3. Wish more games went the minimal route like FC2.
