Mark 'Messhof' Essen's 2D side-scrolling competitive fencing brawler, Nidhogg, is ready to pick up its sword and officially begin battle after several years in development. Essen released a new trailer that points to a January 13 release for PC.

The trailer shows off some new locales not seen previously, including underground mines and a stage high up in the clouds. A lot of the moves seen at events like IndieCade are on display, including wall jumps, dive kicks, and sword tosses. It also has a tournament mode for up to eight players, which will be bolstered by online play.

The 2011 IGF winner and 2013 IndieCade Award winner will be available through Steam.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
