Namco Bandai wants mobile Dark Souls game, but developer is resisting

"We'd like to bring Dark Souls to mobile," Namco Bandai director of global strategy for mobile Alex Adjaj said. However, it's not happening because the developers at From Software don't want to do it.

Obviously, mobile is a hot target for publishers, and Adjaj points to the growing install base of handheld devices across Asia. However, the Dark Souls leads argue that a mobile version "won't be Dark Souls anymore."

"It's very difficult because the guys at From Software are very much console oriented," he told Digital Spy. "The leads on Dark Souls are saying we don't want to do mobile because the controls would have to be changed, and therefore it won't be Dark Souls anymore."

Still, Adjaj believes that "we're getting there," saying "I think it's not an impossible case scenario to see a Dark Souls game coming to mobile at some point."

"Definitely it's something we could bring to mobile in a very successful way."

You stand your ground on this, From Software. A Dark Souls that requires me to swipe my finger to attack or some such bullshit is not a Dark Souls game at all. There's nothing wrong with touch mechanics if a game is built around that mechanic, like the Infinity Blade series. But it's like the lead developers said: if you have to change the controls, then Dark Souls isn't Dark Souls anymore.

I think a lot of games should learn from Dark Souls, but this sounds like a terrible idea.

I'd understand if Apple or Samsung were pushing for this, it would sell a whole lot of replacements for phones that've been thrown at walls.

I'm not saying that Dark Souls mobile isn't a bad idea, but I'll be honest: I'd be really curious to see exactly what kind of bad idea it would be.

If it doesn't happen directly, you'll at least be able to stream with the PS4.

This rather sucks. Between the lines it sounds like From Software about to get strong-armed into making a mobile version. I won't be surprised if the current individuals putting their foot down are out of a job if they don't comply.

Publishers want all the money, developers actually have common sense.

I can't believe people (or the people who work for the people) that allow these games to exist are often so incredibly clueless about them.

Well in this case I doubt they could even make back the cost of development for a dark souls mobile game and if it damages the reputation of the franchise and relationship between namco and From that has a cost too.

It's not Dark Souls if you don't break a controller while grinding through - me and two other ppl have done it in my circle. I'd hate to see me break a tablet playing DS.

DS with no controller is not DS. Reminds me of the awesome point Andrew made about the surface on WC - out of all the tablets, he was to get a true controller to work on. That's the only way I see DS going mobile and maintaining the DS grind.
