2013 Spike VGX winners recap

Even with a fresh rebranding, it was easy to miss that this year's newly-dubbed VGX did, in fact, feature awards. Some things never change. But indeed, awards were handed out, including Game of the Year going to Grand Theft Auto 5 and Naughty Dog taking home honors for Studio of the Year.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Isn't "Will the Circle be Unbroken" in Bioshock Infinite?

Yup. That's what happens whenever I see "Troy Baker" now. I just immediately type "The Last of Us."

They should've selected God Only Knows, that cover was sweet.

it's so silly to see Last of Us take so many awards but not getting Game of the Year. It's like they already were told what their decision on GOTY was going to be but wanted to throw Naughty Dog a bunch of bones because deep down they knew that should have gotten it.

So you'd rather they just give one award "Game of the Year" and leave it at that because if "Game of the Year" is the best game it should win all categories?

Yes, otherwise it looks like they're just trying to give awards to as many games as possible and the categories are arbitrary. How can GTAV win game of the year but lose both best Xbox and Playstation game? The inconsistency renders the winner meaningless.

In a lot of award sets, winner of "_____ of the year" is ineligible for most other awards.

Usually it's because an award show where one game wins literally everything is boring. Think back to the 1994 Oscars: "surprise surprise Forrest Gump won again"

By best Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo, and PC games, they meant games that were exclusive to those platforms (granted, Brothers DID come out on PC later, it was far more marketed on the Xbox). I get your point though, it's as if they didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings or get flack for choosing GTA5 over Last of Us.

I thought GTA5 was a brilliant game from a design and technical standpoint standpoint(GTA Online not-withstanding). The things Rockstar was able to pull off with 7-8 year old hardware was incredible! Gameplay had its issues from time to time, but the game as a whole was such a step-up from GTA4.

No they didn't because GTAV was nominated for best Xbox and Playstation game.

I keep seeing PvZ2 being liked by critics, but no one I know actually thinks it was a good game.

I liked it, it was a really good game more or less marred/ruined by a F2P grind mechanic. I'm pretty sure that they were pretty far into development when EA's marketing drones decided to stick their dicks in it. If it wasn't F2P and beating one world let you get into another world, it would be a damn near perfect sequel.

It's awesome. It's free to play and the paid mechanics are completely optional. You also don't ever feel that you HAVE to pay to progress. A few of the plants are not free but players can live without them, I completed all available worlds without having to buy my way through them. It's a great game.

I thought I would hate the game because of its freemium design but I was pleasantly surprised. The game itself was still a lot of fun to play, and I didn't feel like I was grinding too much (though key drop rates for the Cowboy and Pirate worlds were abysmal). I haven't spent a dime on the game but I'm sitting on roughly 70,000 coins. I'm sure there's a "whale" out there that has more than paid for my copy of the game, but I would've loved to have just given them $20 to buy the game outright to have higher drop rates for keys and powerups(not that I'd use them).
