Reggie Fils-Aime appeared on this year's VGX to confirm some rumors spilled earlier this week about Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Indeed, Cranky Kong will be a playable character. The game was also given a launch date of February 21.

Cranky was shown wielding his trademark cane and using it for a new Scrooge McDuck-like pogo mechanic that lets him bounce safely off spike pits. The audience also got to check out a new Kong-Pow move, a special move in which two Kongs can team up after collecting 100 bananas. In the case of, Cranky and Donkey, they can use a super-powered fist-bump to clear all enemies on-screen.

Tropical Freeze will allow players to control Kongs with the Wii U GamePad, Wii Remote, and Wii U Pro Controller, meaning the motion control of Donkey Kong Country Returns may be a thing of the past. Check out the video below to see some of the game in action.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
