Twitch broadcasting won't be ready on Xbox One until 2014

Twitch has announced a dedicated app for Xbox One to come in 2014, which will offer the ability to snap-view streams while playing, and achievements for viewing patterns.

Twitch is one of the many entertainment apps coming to Xbox One. However, while you can already create your own in-game streams on PS4, the Xbox One app won't be able to do the same until early 2014.

"We know the ability to instantly broadcast gameplay is something the gaming community is excited about, and we are too. We are working to ensure the initial Twitch on Xbox One broadcasting experience meets the expectations of the Twitch community, so while this feature won't be available right away, we'll let you know as soon as it is ready," Microsoft said in the announcement. "Our goal is to deliver it during the first part of 2014."

The Twitch app that launches with Xbox One will be able to play back streams. A short trailer for the Twitch app teases the new features, particularly the ability to use Xbox One's snap function to turn on a stream while you play. You can also bring it up with voice commands by saying, "Xbox, go to Twitch." Obviously, it will require an Xbox Live Gold subscription.

Finally, Xbox One viewers will be able to earn special "media achievements" simply by watching Twitch. The announcement cites examples like watching at night for a "Night Owl" achievement, or joining a stream with 100,000 viewers for the "Standing Room Only" achievement. It will launch with 10 Achievements, ranging from time spent watching in total, or consecutively, or during certain hours. Our favorite might be the "Hipster" achievement, for spending an hour watching channels that have less than 10 viewers.

Way to vagueness there... So I guess by June at the latest, since that would be the last time to still be considered the "first part"... hopefully its no later than March though.

Considering all the stuff they managed to make for November, this isn't that bad. I cannot imagine how hard the crunch was this year for that team.

Does this mean we can't stream either on day one? Or is this just the ability to watch?

I'm fine with this. I've always wanted to get into broadcasting on twitch, at least casually, but never really knew how to go about it. I figure they're just going to be making easier for those of us who just want to sort of hop into it.

Going to be interesting to see how twitch changes after both consoles are fully up and running.

This seems like an odd thing to whiff on, Twitch is such a huge part of many peoples gaming experience now.

Twitch will be the winner of this console generation.

Especially since Sony had to add Twitch support to the PS4 after E3 when they realized nobody gave a shit about Ustream, and seemed to have little trouble doing so in time for their launch.

I kind of doubt it'll decide the console generation, but it's still damn odd.

Well at least I'll be able to watch people streaming from their PS4s on my Xbone!

I think the truth in this is that Sony's streaming stuff caught MS off guard, they put the feature in as soon as they could so they could be on par, but announcing something and shipping it is still an entirely different thing.

Uhm meth is bad ok? You realize that Twitch has been on the Xbox 360 for like 6-8 months already, right? I imagine that MS and Twitch are simply working to improve the experience to account fo rvarious connections types, stream perf, etc.

I'd rather they do it right than release a shit app.
