How Heroes of the Storm aims to attract MOBA beginners

There's a high barrier of entry to games like Dota 2 and League of Legends, so how does Blizzard's Heroes of the Storm hope to court newcomers to the MOBA genre?

Perhaps more than any other, the MOBA genre can be the hardest for beginners to grasp. Part of that is because of the hardcore, dedicated communities surrounding the genre's two most recognizable names: Dota 2 and League of Legends. So how does Blizzard's upcoming entry, Heroes of the Storm, hope to appeal to the novice?

For starters, only a small selection of heroes will be available at the beginning of Heroes of the Storm and they'll have noticeably fewer attacks to manage than the average MOBA character. Blizzard hopes that this will help educate newcomers, while also acknowledging that experienced MOBA players will be able to unlock stronger heroes quickly.

"[Beginning characters] may not even have four abilities, they may only have two [attacks] and two passives," Blizzard art director Sam "Samwise" Didier told Shacknews. "But also, the way we bring you into the game, you won't have a bunch of heroes to choose from. You may have one or two. After you play with them a while, you'll unlock a little more. Someone who is a stud at these types of games will chew through that, no problem. But for the people who aren't familiar with this genre, this is a nice way of letting them get into it and get used to what this game is."

Blizzard has also seen some of the team infighting that MOBA's can bring out and hopes to emphasize teamwork for Heroes of the Storm. Their approach will largely consist of team leveling, in which all players will level up at the same rate, regardless of how many kills a player has over the course of a session. Blizzard hopes that this removed pressure will lead to interesting teamwork combinations. For example, Abathur from StarCraft can stand in the background and cast spells to buff teammates without directly entering combat, but will still receive the same amount of XP as Arthas the Lich King, who got the majority of the kills. Didier hopes this will help build comradery, pointing out, "Why do you want to hate your teammates? You should hate the enemy."

Newcomers may also appreciate Heroes of the Storm for its brevity, as each session lasts roughly 20 minutes, though there is a timer setting for 25 minutes, for anyone hoping to go a little longer. As beginners play through the game more and more, Didier hopes they'll find the learning curve to be similar to other Blizzard titles.

"With any of our games, we have a nice starting zone area," concluded Didier. "World of Warcraft can be very intimidating, but you start off in your starting zone as a human Paladin and you're fighting wolves and cobalts and then you explore and get farther and farther. We want to do the same thing with [Heroes of the Storm], where it's easy to get into, but the hardcore players are just going to be able to take this to any extreme they want."

        Raynor removed a lot of the intimidation factor for me that usually comes with a lot of these games.

      I think a large part of their success pins on them being able to manage the community. All the assholes and Brazilians seem to be a very large barrier to enjoyment.

            This is what's kept me from trying MOBAs. I hear horror stories about sadfats and neckbeards who play 16 hours a day and rip apart anyone who holds them back from improving their W-L record. Whatevs.

            Hence the idea of team leveling mentioned in the article, which Blizzard hopes will remove a lot of that team animosity.

              Sure, and it's a good effort. I really don't see it changing a whole lot, though. You're still going to get those same people screaming about others not pulling their weight, or how they're carrying the whole team. i HOPE it fixes it, because I really do like the MOBA genre, just not the people that play them. I'm simply not holding my breath.

                I got yelled at in CO-OP in D3 from my itemization. Any of these games with RPG mechanics are going to bring out a certain kind of jerk who insists on telling you the right way to do everything.

                  Outside of people obviously leeching in MP10, I don't think I've ever seen any hate in Diablo 3 mp.

                  And I've played a fuckton of open public games.

                    Yeah D3 has strangly enough been some of the nicest online interactions I've ever had in an online game besides Vanilla WoW. Almost all of my legendaries are from some guy being like "Want this? It'll help!"

      Learning curve in LoL is no where near as bad as DOTA 2.

      As much as I want to try HotS, no last hits makes me think of Solstice Arena which is about MOBA-lite as you can get. Skill in farming can make up for a lack of pvp skill and vice versa. This makes farming trivial so is all the focus on pvp?

        Maybe they are going for the MOBA-lite crowd? LoL is hard enough to get into and it's way easier than DOTA so there could still be a market there for the Bronze V crew getting rolled every game and blaming everyone but themselves because they don't understand the game.

            Last hits add an element of timing and skill budgeting. It's also a major mechanic inherent to the genre. With no last hits, You don't have to worry about gold. With no focus on gold, there's no items. No items means less customization and less emphasis on buying for situations or match ups.

            So basically all the focus is now on pvp and the map objectives. Sounds like an over simplification to me. Dawngate at least is attempting to streamline the items, not remove them completely.

              And most importantly, it's a reason to keep your eyes glued to the main screen and away from the minimap (which is partly what sets people up to get ganked/confused).

        These matches lasted about 20-30 minutes I played couple games at Blizzcon

        We finished one match killing their base
        Second two games game ended by timer they had for games.

            I had newbs on my teams most of the time. Like brand new players.

            The match we won 3 friends vs 5 friends, luckily our two pugs/randoms knew how to play.

        Yeah, he totally nails why Heroes works. He also does a great job explaining why what I missed from DOTA (strong disable and CC) wouldn't work in this.
