All disc-based PS4 games require installation

If you buy a boxed version of a PS4 game, you'll have to wait out an installation process. Fortunately, it works with cached data, which will let you play some of your games as they install.

PS4 owners may want to upgrade their hard drives. Sony has confirmed that every game requires an installation, including games purchased at retail. The mandatory installation requirement is similar to Xbox One.

A new FAQ reveals that, "all PS4 Blu-ray Disc games must be cached to the hard drive to ensure a smooth gaming experience. However, certain titles may not require you to wait for the game data to be fully cached before starting gameplay. In order to start playing disc-based games, users will need to insert the game disc into PS4 just like on the PS3 system."

With games reaching sizes of up to 50GB, the 500GB hard drive PS4 launches with will fill up rather quickly. Thankfully, hard drives are user-replaceable.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

This is awesome news to me. There were too many third party titles (and even some first party titles like the new Sly game) that didn't have to be installed and it made the loading time so damn long.

Yeah pretty happy they are going this route. I've been buying mostly digital on the PS3 since it provides much better performance so it will be nice that I have the option to go disc based for games that might plan to resell or such.

Disc based sales seem to happen more often than digital as well.

Hopefully the PS4's optical drive is faster than the one on the PS3.

Caching is different than perma install. You can play the game fine off the disc, it's not like you have to wait for the install to play. It does it simultaneously (PlayGo). Shu was explaining this on Twitter.

That's not what the quote from Sony in the article says. In fact, it says pretty much the exact opposite - you can't play the game off the disc, and you generally will have to wait for the install to play.

Thank you! You're the only other person I've seen understand this all day. Yet all the media would have you think otherwise.

As long as this isn't used as a way to prevent your friend from borrowing your game, I couldn't care less.

It's cool not to have to put the disk in.

So proprietary harddrives and mandatory installs? That doesn't sound like a setup rife for gouging at all.

Wait you can't use regular hard drives with the PS4? I know they said you cant use external drives with it, but not being able to put in your own interal drive suuuucks.

I'm pretty sure the PS4 let's you swap drives. The XB1 is embedded in the bowels of the machine so you can't. Partly makes me want to wait for a 1TB SKU.

You can attach external storage (not at launch) to the X1. You can't for games on the PS4. That's a pretty big deficiency. :(

It will be interesting to see how many people spend more on their hard drive (512 SSD, etc) than the PS4 itself. That's assuming the data shows a big benefit to SSDs in the console.
