PS Vita TV response in US and Europe has been surprising, says Sony

Sony executives have commented on the response from US and Europe to the Vita TV, calling it surprising but encouraging. They say "of course" they're considering a release here, but are considering the competing market.

The PlayStation Vita TV is only announced for Japan so far, though Sony has issued some cheeky hints about it coming westward. Apparently, Sony was surprised to find a strong response in the west, which may explain why it initially only announced the device for Japan.

Sony Japan exec Masayasu Ito told Eurogamer that the response had been "strong... more than we expected."

Ito said that "of course" the company is considering launching in the US and Europe, but added some caveats. "When it comes to the timing, we'll have to watch the environment and identify what other services are available in the US and Europe and whether we'll have to add other services. We'll have to look at all of this before deciding on a launch in Europe and the United States."

Sony Computer Entertainment head Andrew House also said, in a separate interview with Eurogamer, that the company chose to launch in Japan first because the market is so bare for TV streaming boxes. He said Japan is "a little behind the adoption curve," which opened up the door for them to stake their claim as a market leader.

The west, by comparison, already has several competing streaming boxes, which makes Sony a little more hesitant. House said that the Vita TV capabilities are "already part and parcel of how consumers view media there." That said, he noted the response has been "very, very positive" and that the company is feeling "very encouraged." Very, you guys.

I don't know if Sony should be reading so much into neogaf posts and blogs. The price point is pretty attractive though.

Shoot, I'd buy one if they came out in the US for the PS4 streaming if nothing else. Shame it doesn't stream at 1080p though.

I was bummed when I heard that it wasn't going to be getting a worldwide release. Here's hoping that they're just going to flip the releases with Japan. Since they're getting the VitaTV when we're getting the PS4, maybe we'll get the VitaTV when they're getting the PS4.

if this thing supports european VOD services and can mirror the ps4 I would buy it for that alone for 100€. Having access to a handheld I never owned is just a fantastic bonus at that point. Too bad about the 1080i, but maybe they fix that in version 2.0 later down the road.
