Microsoft and PepsiCo are continuing their long-running partnership to market Mountain Dew and Doritos products to Xbox gamers. This year, the two companies will be giving away free Xbox One systems in a new "Every 2 Minutes" promo. And as usual, the event will coincide with the release of new "Game Fuel" products.

To participate, you'll have to buy specially marked Mountain Dew and Doritos products to collect codes. Then, starting September 30th, you'll be able to enter those codes onto Every2Minutes.com. Finally, on November 5th, you'll be able to use your points to bid on Xbox One systems. Nightly auctions will run every two minutes from 9PM ET to 2AM ET. That means 150 systems will be given away every night.

The auctions will run until December 9th, meaning the promo will end up giving away over 5000 systems.

While you'll be able to find codes on standard Mountain Dew and Doritos products, the two brands will have special editions targeted specifically at gamers. Mountain Dew Game Fuel returns in Citrus Cherry and a new Electrifying Berry flavor. Doritos will also offer a special "Gamer Pack," which includes Doritos Nacho Cheese chips in a "conveniently packaged, re-sealable, wide-opening table-top box, so gamers can snack easier and play harder."

We really didn't make that last bit up. It'll be available in Wal-Mart come October.

I think Sony made the smartest move by giving a PS4 to every GameStop manager.

That wasn't a Sony move, that was a GameStop move. And every manager is getting an Xbox One as well.

I wonder how much taxes you would have to pay on it?

I don't know if you'd have to pay taxes on it. I think the actual cutoff to report it on your taxes is $600, so unless they gave you a couple of games to push it over $600 I think you can not report it.

You're supposed to report any prize/sweepstakes as income, no matter how small. However, a 1099 needs only be issued for $600 or greater, so there's not much of a trail for the IRS. Also you'd be taxed at basically your effective income tax rates (probably around 20% unless you're making bank).

You have to bid? How does that work? Is it a drawing where you increase your chances by putting in more codes at one time?

      • reply
        August 30, 2013 8:01 AM

Codes give you tickets points you can use to enter the drawing for that day. You can redeem the codes at any time and then spend the points on the days' drawing you want to. I've seen several sweepstakes like this.

Considering the avg age of the typical gamer has been increasing, you'd think MS would start thinking about partnering with One A Day to include a multi-vitamin.

If Doritos really wanted to make a snack that resonated with gamers they would make the chips about half to a third of their original size, then package them in cans.

That way they could grab the container in one hand and load a mouthful without taking their eyes off the screen, and they wouldn't get their hands -- and thus, controllers -- mucked up with chip residue.

That would seem to fit their pattern. Either that or just randomly pick people who have Playstation+ and just ship them a free PS4's.

"We here at Sony don't want you to WORK for your free consoles like 'the other guys' - we just ship them to you!"

This is how they can reduce the number of winners who claim their prize. Remember back when Pepsi and Coke went to codes for their under-the-cap sweepstakes? Same thing. (Well, in this case, it is quite literally the same thing).

Good point. I guess the best give-away scenario for them is that they appear to be generous, but never have to actually give out any rewards?

Your ability to win is directly tied to how much of the product you purchase? Or are the point values you receive from redeeming codes randomized?

anyways i just ran a macro submitting all these bullshit email addresses that were on the same domain, and all the misdirected emails would be forwarded to one account and then i just put all those points into my real account.
