Endless Space developer Amplitude Studios teased Dungeon of the Endless last week, but it had another card up its sleeve: Endless Legend. The 4X fantasy strategy game is planning a spring 2014 release. It features eight civilizations in both single- and multiplayer, and the ability to search for artifacts, recruit minor factions, collect new technology and magic, and do battle against opposing armies. The story in the announcement describes gathering resources under threat of looming apocalypse, and the need to expand your empire to survive. "Creating a fantasy 4X game was a dream for all of us at Amplitude," said Amplitude CEO Mathieu Girard, in the announcement. "The success of Endless Space and the support of our community have allowed to make this dream come true. With respect towards great games released before us, we intend to set a new benchmark in creating a rich, immersive, thrilling, and accessible 4X strategy game in a new fantasy setting."

I don't know why, but I was really hoping Amplitude would stick with the space/ sci-fi genre.

But 4X games are predominantly space/scifi, or at least it feels that way. Another fantasy 4x from a solid dev sounds fucking great to me.

I agree. I've never played a fantasy 4x, they really haven't been that common. Though we seem to now be getting a pile of them all at once - this and Age of Wonders 3 next year, and Fallen Enchantress and Warlock from last year.

The original, Master of Magic, is still the best. Here's to hoping these guys can top it.
