EVE: Valkyrie coming for Oculus Rift

The folks who prototyped it as EVE-VR have moved over to CCP's Newcastle studio to finish the game, IGN reports.

"From the moment this year's Fanfest attendees first got their hands on EVE-VR, the question has been, 'When can I have this?' What started as a passion project by a small, incredibly talented group of CCP developers became one of the most highly anticipated games of the year - before we even announced it," CCP CEO Hilmar Petursson said.

"We have big plans for EVE: Valkyrie and I can't wait to share more details later this year," the big tease added. EVE: Valkyrie is due on Rift in 2014. Look, look at this video game:

Holy crap yes. Bit disappointed that its a standalone game, would have liked to have seen how it would have worked in Eve proper.

At the very least maybe they'll introduce the fighter-style ships this game will be sure to have into Eve Online.

Pilots actually able to pilot ships properly would ruin everything.

I don't see how they could add it in honestly.

I really don't like the UI principles in EVE, it feels more like using a software application than playing a game. They've been making baby steps in the right direction with things like the radial menu but I've wanted to be able to properly pilot ships in EVE since it launched 10 years ago but they've made it clear on many occasions that that will never happen. It goes against the basic design and goals of the game they've said.

People often complain about the UI and while it is offputting to be sure, the sheer amount of data that has to be surfaced or at least accessible means it will never be simple like most games. EvE is just too complex for that.

Eve has one of the best UIs out there, but like Beo said, there's a ton of information to consume so you end up with a ton of it on screen. Of course you can close all that shit if you want to. WoW raiders have crazy UI setups as well.

Not disputing that, it's not the game I always wanted it to be :) Star Citizen seems more like it though.

I agree, its a tactical game and not a pilot-the-ship kind of game. It would be more fun to really take skill to pilot, aim & shoot

fuck that radial menu in the ass. seriously...used to be one click...now i have to sit there and verify wtf i am doing when i click on that shit. CCP have some of the best and the absolute worst UI designers.

I played this twice at E3. It's pretty mind blowing. By FAR the best Rift experience I've ever had. VERY happy to hear this.

i like how EVE is going with the multiple-genre (main game, Dust 514, now this) approach to their universe

I don't think this will be connected to the EvE universe (servers) like Dust is but it is still neat that it likely takes place in that fiction.

it might not be directly connected a la DUST514 style....however....EVE could receive an expansion based on the outcome of the Valkyrie game lore/storyline. whatever that might be.
