Halo: Spartan Assault is hitting Windows 8 PCs and mobile devices today, according to a date briefly dropped on the official site.

The top-down virtual twin-stick shooter Halo: Spartan Assault for Windows 8 PCs, mobiles, and tablets is out today. We weren't impressed by the preview build we played, but hey, it's the first new Halo game for PC since Halo 2.

According to Halo Waypoint, the game will be available to download at 4PM PT today. (That's in less than half an hour, folks.) You should be able to find it on the Windows Store.

Do note that the mobile version of the game will be exclusive to Verizon Wireless service through August 16. Phones on other providers will have to wait before they can jump in. 1GB of RAM is required to run the game on Windows Phone 8 devices.

That actually looks really good. It's out now - http://apps.microsoft.com/windows/en-tt/app/halo-spartan-assault/8fe2d694-baa2-4011-99c0-3a22216223bb
$45? WTF? (and what's TT?) And it seems it's not available on Australia yet as clicking on "View in Windows Store" just took me the store home page.

Does it still not have controller support, because you know, it's not like MS has anything to do with controllers or like they're useful for twin stick shooters.

I thought they said that would be a post-release patch.

They did. I remember laughing at Ryan Davis' reaction to the news of this game supporting mouse and keyboard but NOT controller. And then Patrick highlighted how ridiculous it was, considering that you can sync a 360 controller to a Surface, and other Windows RT devices usually have at least a USB 2 port.

This whole game sounds like a crazy rollercoaster of design focus changes, all because there's not going to be a Halo 5 released or announced for 2013. Was this a phone game that morphed into a Surface and Windows RT game? Or was it originally a Surface exclusive? Either way, Microsoft Studios obviously didn't do an "outside the bubble" test of how the announcement would be received. And now, I can laugh at the encapsulated zeitgeist that is in the 06-04-2013 Bombcast, and consider this another E3 Judge's Week stinker announcement, much like PowerGig: Rise of the SixString in 2010.
