PlayStation 3 4.46 patch out; Sony details how to fix crashed consoles

Sony has released a 4.46 update to fix the consoles affected by 4.45, and has issued a step-by-step guide of how to apply it by starting the system in Safe Mode.

A recent firmware update spelled trouble for some PlayStation 3 owners, crashing their consoles. Sony apologized and, as promised, has released a 4.46 patch, as well as offering details on how to implement it if you were one of the affected users.

If your console hasn't been displaying the XMB since the update, a step-by-step guide is available. In short, it involves creating a few folders on a USB flash drive with at least 168 MB of free space. You'll then download the 4.46 update to the stick, and start your PS3 in Safe Mode. After that, you can plug in the flash drive and apply the update to get the system back in working order.

Of course, version 4.46 is available for all users, and most can simply download it as usual. The update seems squarely focused on fixing the 4.45 bug, so if your system is already running fine you won't see new functionality coming out of the update.

I had no issues with the original 4.45 and 4.46 also installed just fine.

I do not have a user installed HDD though.

because there was one bad patch that affected a limited amount of people six years into a product cycle?

Try reading more, fanboys. I said "ONE", and this is only one of MANY flubs. I have two working PS3's and a dead 60GB. White-knight all you want, and go pay $400+ to be beta testers for the new consoles. I'll wait til the second runs (or maybe third).

I'm on my 4th Xbox 360 and I'm waiting likely a year before I jump on the next-gen systems... There is no compelling reason to jump on at launch.

Also most big problems like the RROD don't crop up until a few years later... My first 360 died after 2.5yrs.

I bought a 360 and Wii at launch. I'm pretty happy to have gone through that launch experience with my own money and labor so I don't need to do it again. Especially with a backlog.

I'm not buying at launch because if you wait a few years you'll have:

              - An established game library.
              - Lower prices for top games that have already sold millions.
              - Bundle deals for a free game or accessory.
              - Hardware revisions to the console.

My launch PS3 is still going strong. Plays PS1/PS2/PS3 games like a champ. Then again I take care of my stuff so that probably helps too.

Well...my PS3 got bricked today by Sony's 4.46 update.... It was working perfectly fine before that. This bricking is even worse though because the unit will not enter safe mode, even though I followed Sony's instructions to the letter. My Metal Gear Solid HD collection Blu-Ray is still stuck in the tray and can't be removed unless I take the machine apart. All those free PS Plus games... stuck on the 500 GB hard drive that I'd upgraded on the unit only months ago. I already called Sony Support. Of course it has no warranty because it's one of the old 40GB Spiderman PS3 Fat units, so it will cost $100 to fix, and at this point in the console game it's pretty much a total write-off. Today's events have suddenly made me a lot less excited about my PS4 pre-order...and physical media in general. Talk about irony.
