Nvidia's Shield console was due to hit retail tomorrow. However, a last-minute snafu with a "mechanical issue" has the portable gaming device delayed a month. According to Shield's official website, it will be out by "the end of July."

Speaking on its official blog, Nvidia's Jason Paul says that it won't release the device "until it's fully up to the exacting standards that NVIDIA's known for." According to Paul, "the issue relates to a third-party mechanical component, and we're working around the clock with the supplier to get it up to our expectations."

For the uninitiated, Shield is a mini console that combines a Xbox 360-style controller with a 5-inch, 720p, multi-touch, flip-up screen. It's powered by Nvidia's Tegra 4 mobile CPU/GPU combo with 2GB of RAM and the Jelly Bean version of Google's Android OS. While significantly more powerful than Ouya, it also costs significantly more: $299.

until it's fully up to the exacting standards that NVIDIA's known for.
So the problem was the lack of overheating?

I was thinking that they didn't AMD to try one-up in their marketing material.

Yeah, it's just one of those things which is really cool.... I just have no desire to pay money for it. I played it at PAX East and it was actually a really nice device. Just when I want to play games on Android.. I use my phone. When I want to play REAL handheld games, I use my 3DS. When I play games at home, PC or 360. There is just no place in my life for this thing, and I don't think I'm the only one.

The fan profiles on Nvidia cards do suck; I think they bias it towards quiet over adequate cooling.
You can download 3rd party tools to adjust the fan curve though; I've got mine set to ramp up to 100% fan quicker. It's louder than the Nvidia default, but I'd much rather have my card last longer.
