BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma hitting PS3 in 2014

The fine folks at Aksys Games are continuing to feed us fine games from Japan, announcing today that BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma will arrive on North American PS3s in 2014. It's the fifth in the BlazBlue fighting series from Arc System Works, the famed fightfans also responsible for the many Guilty Gear games and Persona 4 Arena.

Chrono Phantasma adds five new fighters and another two as DLC, while BlazBlue's old characters have been "redesigned" with new moves. As you'd expect from the latest iteration of a punch 'em up, it also tweaks systems and balance and all that.

The game's out now in Japanese arcades and hits PS3 there later this year, so we're not as far behind as we can be with these things. Unfortunately, there's no mention of an Xbox 360 edition for either here or there. Anyway, have a gander at Chrono Phantasms in this Japanese trailer:

      BlazBlue: Google Translate

These games are so much fun, but the titles make them embarrassing to talk about in public.

It makes far more sense once you've played through the story. Unfortunately, that means to explain them fully would be to spoil the stories, so here's a quick primer:

The first game: BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger
The main overarching story takes place in post-apocalyptic future Japan in A.D. 2199, about 100 years after the Black Beast almost brought humanity to extinction, but was saved by the Six Heroes. There was a specific event in the present that triggered calamity in the past; therefore the name, "Calamity Trigger".

The second game: BlazBlue: Continuum Shift
It turns out that the world is in a time loop, but there are different points in the spacetime continuum that are affecting history, and intertwine together during a "continuum shift"

The third game: BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma
I don't know yet, but there is one significant ghostly character from the second game, and there's plenty of time shifting, so there's a huge hint.

Also, this is the game with a squirrel lady (Makoto Nanaya, playable) and three cat people (Taokaka, playable, and two NPCs in the storyline: Jubei, and Professor Kokonoe). Don't let that freak you out too much; even though there's a bit of humor referencing anime stuff, internet memes, and so on, each character has depth to them. Arc System Works is a bit like Atlus in this respect, in that they do a lot of deep story writing that is delivered in a visual novel style (and is part of why Persona 4 Arena worked so well; it helped that the Arc developers were huge Persona fans).

As for the fighting system, I played a bit of Continuum Shift Extend offline in some matches, and the wildly different control schemes baffle me. I had "Stylish Mode" (easy mode) enabled during the storyline, and haven't had enough practice in normal mode, but my best character is Noel, since her combos are straightforward. Tager is a grappler style character, Arakune is sort of a keep-away character, and Litchi has a really esoteric combo structure that is apparently able to deal out the most damage... if you can memorize how to do all the crazy combo controls.
