Final Fantasy XIV relaunching in summer, PS3 beta in June
The relaunch of Final Fantasy XIV will occur this summer, after a third round of beta testing includes the PS3 and cross-platform play in June.
Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy XIV will relaunch sometime this summer, after a third round of beta testing in June. The third phase will include testing on PlayStation 3, and offer cross-platform play.
Eurogamer reports that in the third phase, the city states Ul'dah and Limsa Lominsa will open as well.
Some of these details are slightly different than the roadmap that Square Enix laid out earlier this year. It was aiming for a June release of the finalized game, and the fourth phase would have been the one to include PlayStation 3 owners. But, as we noted at the time, all of that was subject to change and the phases have been lasting longer than expected.
The new game director, Naoki Yoshida, said it was a mistake to rush into launch after a flawed beta test, which is what necessitated the "Realm Reborn" relaunch in the first place. So it makes sense that he's taking his time. Beta sign-ups are available at the official site.

Good on them for actually trying to fix the game and relaunch it. They could have easily let it go f2p and let it languish.

Who's to say it won't go F2P yet. The only MMO in the last few years that launched as P2P and still is that I know of is Rift. Of course this is a Japanese company we're talking about, they aren't exactly known for change.
