Petroglyph concedes defeat in Victory Kickstarter

After a woefully slow start, Petroglyph Games has cancelled its crowdfunding drive for Victory. The studio founded by Westwood veterans was looking for $700,000 to make the free-to-play game it described as what you'd get "if World of Tanks, StarCraft and League of Legends had a baby," but after ten days only had $29,471 in pledges.

After a woefully slow start, Petroglyph Games has cancelled its crowdfunding drive for Victory. The studio founded by Westwood veterans was looking for $700,000 to make the free-to-play game it described as what you'd get "if World of Tanks, StarCraft and League of Legends had a baby," but after ten days only had $29,471 in pledges.

"We've listened carefully to what the Kickstarter community has said, and it has given us many ideas of games we could do in the future," Petroglyph said in the announcement.

Though the Kickstarter campaign failed, this may not be the last we hear of Victory.

"Additionally, multiple game publishers have expressed interest in Victory, based on your support, and we hope to still bring Victory to you with their help."

This failure is another nasty blow for Petroglyph. It had been working on free-to-play RTS End of Nations but things weren't up to scratch and ultimately published Trion Worlds took over development. After this, Petroglyph had to lay off some of its staff.

      Why would people want to crowd fund a free to play game? I think most of the successful kickstarters have used it as a bit of a pre-order. If the game is just going to be free anyway then might as well wait.

        This sentiment has been talked about in various forums, and I fall in with it as well. Most things I'm shopping/pre-ordering. Others are things I think are just neat and want to help fund a new idea that probably wouldn't make it in the standard publishing world. But, that's also why there are $5 tiers; for peeps that want to contribute to the idea but may not want to layout for a full pre-order or true funding level investment.

        I'd love to hear what the publishing world 'really' thinks about Kickstarter campaigns.

      I wish there were more RTS but it just didn't seem like that great of a game idea.

        WWII is an overdone genre, and personally, I've been so sick of it the past decade that I skipped Company of Heroes, despite the reviews and knowing people personally who loved it. I don't speak for the masses, but personally, I'd prefer nearly anything over WWII as far as time periods/genres go.
