Painkiller Hell & Damnation Mac and Linux editions following mod tools

Few games receive mod tools nowadays, partly because they take time and money to make and support but also because mods often offer for free the sorts of things publishers try to sell as paid DLC. While Painkiller: Hell & Damnation offers a few pieces of DLC, it's also letting players make their own stuff for the FPS remake. Publisher Nordic Games today announced that the mod kit will launch in April. Mac and Linux editions will follow, too.

The mod kit, which will hook into the Steam Workshop, supposedly offers the same tools The Farm 51 used to make the game in the first place. Nordic says to expect "items, maps, weapons and multiplayer skins" from modders, though one imagines we'll see more inventive things too.

The tools are due to launch in "early April," followed by Mac and Linux editions of H&D in April or May. Its Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are due in April too.

"The Mod Kit is a great tool that we want to make available for the Painkiller and its modding community," Nordic marketing man Philipp Brock said in the announcement. "When you look at the history of video games, specifically at the mod-history in the FPS and RTS department, a serious proportion of big names originally come from exactly that community." Too flipping right.

If you're a dab hand with UnrealEd and champing at the bit, you can jump up and down and yell at Nordic for a chance to get early access to beta tools.
