Skyrim 1.9 beta update adds 'Legendary' difficulty, skill reset

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is starting the beta test for its 1.9 update, which adds a new "Legendary" difficulty and effectively removes the level cap by letting you reset "Legendary" skills upon hitting 100.

You may be the Dovahkiin and all, but if you've run the length of Skyrim backwards and forwards you might be craving a little extra challenge. The game's 1.9 update plans to fix all that, and PC players can already download the beta to take advantage of the new features and bug fixes.

The Bethesda Blog outlines two major features: a new Legendary difficulty setting, and Legendary skills. If you hit level 100 for a skill, you can make it "Legendary," which resets it to level 15, resets the Perks, and allows it to be used for leveling again. Effectively, this means that the overall level cap is removed as long as you keep resetting your skills. The update also comes paired with dozens of general stability improvements and bug fixes.

Steam users can opt-in to the beta from the Properties menu, from the Library. Bethesda recommends you make sure you have existing saves and you don't save over them, and says you should start without user-made mods to be on the safe side. The studio hopes to roll out the beta to console players sometime later this month.

resetting skills for no reason other than to level them again?

But then your skill increases can go towards leveling again. This is basically making it easier to get super high level.

what do you want a super high level with if you've already got skills to 100?

I hope in TES VI they can finally have a not horrible leveling system or, best case, no levels at all.

I can want a new engine too, but we both know that's not happening.

I like Skyrims leveling system better than Oblivions anyways.

True, but Oblivion's is literally the worst that I can think of in any RPG I have ever played or heard explained to me so that's not saying much.

It also exposed players that were literally the worst. Jumping around in the initial cave for 5 hours to max out athleticism shined equally poorly on the player and the leveling system.

WTF? Skyrim's leveling system is about as robust an open world RPG's can get. You guys will find something to complain about for everything.

They need to address the combat and loot first. Especially the loot, I've been using basically the same crafted gear I made 150 played hours ago. Of course I still love the shit out of this game or I wouldn't have dumped so much time into it, there's just still lots of room for improvement :D

I'm OK with the leveling system, but the perks could be more interesting. There's a definite balance problem though because enemies are either pushovers and stupidly overpowered, there seems to be very little middle ground. And enough with the draugr, we get it!

Don't you get perk points or something on level up?

hopefully legendary-locked content. level 100 required. :D otherwise, no point. if there's raid-grade dungeons and bosses and quests, holy shit I'm all for it.

I think it is because of the difficulty of the game becomes way too easy once you max out certain skills. There a number of shouts and setups after you beat the main story that are quite powerful. At that point the challenge is gone.

I wonder if Legendary difficulty does anything beyond just tweaking how much damage you deal and receive like the regular difficulty settings.

      I'm guessing not.

But here you do this not just for a cosmetic and bragging rights improvement, but to gain more overall skillpoints and health/magicka/stamina to develop your character. But it does remind one of the prestigeing.

the only practical benefit i can see from resetting skills is to respec your skill points, so they dont get wasted in useless skills
