Diablo 3 won't support PC-PlayStation play

You had surely already guessed this, being a sensible person with even a smidgen of awareness of how the video games industry works, but now it's confirmed: the PS3 and PS4 editions of Diablo III will not have cross-platform play with the PC original. It won't support a keyboard and mouse either, Blizzard says. Gosh, it's like it's a different game made specifically for consoles.

It won't support a keyboard and mouse either, Blizzard says. Gosh, it's like it's a different game made specifically for consoles.

"While we think cross-platform play would be awesome, there are currently no plans to allow connectivity between PlayStation Network and Battle.net (this is pretty standard for most games that have PC and console support)," Blizzard community manager 'Vaeflare' replied on the D3 forums. "As a result, the characters on your Battle.net account and PlayStation account will also remain separate."

The PlayStation edition is a changed game, with features like an evade move. Throwing the two together, or adding a dodge to PC, would be weird, not to mention a huge investment of effort and money for a feature not many people will want to use.

It's being "designed with a controller in mind" on console, Vaeflare said, so don't expect support for USB mice or keyboards. Blizzard doesn't plan to carry controller support back over to PC either.

No word from Blizzard yet on when the PlayStation edition of Diablo 3 will launch.

We have. But the console manufacturers don't want it. Besides ShadowRun (360/Vista) there's only been Valve's Portal 2 that had cross-platform play.

just because only a couple games dont have it doesn't mean console players don't want it.

Other than shooters why wouldn't they? More players is better right?

I didn't say console players. I said console manufacturers. Aka, Microsoft and Sony (and Nintendo) have not only no interest, they actively prevent developers from making this work. Only Valve managed to get Sony to open up and allow it.

Yeah. The fighting game Skullgirls is getting a PC port released on Steam. The devs were hoping to do PC/PS3 play via Steamworks like Portal 2 did, but were told by Sony that Steamworks is not an approved middleware. Evidently, the reason it happened with Portal is because Portal and Steamworks are both Valve produces so in that case its technically not middleware.

I would think it would benefit sony if there were ps3-xbox crossplay. There are plenty of games that I won't buy on ps3 because all my friends have 360s.

Honestly, I don't think the engineering issues are remotely bad enough to justify it. The console manufacturers effectively cause massive rifts in game communities to no one's benefit but their own. I fucking hate this more than anything else about modern console gaming.

I'm surprised that they think the PC crowd would not use a defensive ability to dodge attacks. I'm sure hard core players would like this.

I didn't expcet it. Actually I was sure they wouldn't do that. I'm fairly certain the overhaul of the game will be quite substantial, so the two versions probably won't be very compatible anyway. Oh well, I only play solo and sometimes with some friends, but not with strangers, so this doesn't affect me at all.

at least let you import your characters or provide a Mass Effect style bonus upon creation so that you HAVE THE OPTION of starting off with some more loot/money or some shit considering how much time we blew on the PC version.

Uhm, you can just keep playing the PC version? Or are you seriously suggesting that the console version will be better? Hahahaha, fuck no!

Also I find it sad that you feel you "blew" your time on the game. I enjoyed every second of it. Especially now that most grave problems are sorted out (pre-patch inferno was ridiculous and the loot system has gotten a lot better).

i have at best 2hrs of freetime a day to play games 2-3 times a week. The journey through Normal And Nightmare were boring - Hell was great fun and Inferno was a complete waste of time especially since they've since patched the shit out of it.

I had a great time with my first character but then the grind sets in and while I'd like to experience the infernal machine and some of the other 'end game' content i have no intention of doing it in front of a computer, grinding out mats for a staff of herding or to get the 8 trillion gold required to gear up.

              Fair points, I guess.
I agree that normal and nightmare were boring. A cakewalk, basically. Inferno was a waste of time, because it was utterly unbalanced. I personally think that after the patches it has gotten quite good, because you can actually fight the mobs well now, but they can still kill you quickly, if you don't watch out. Also with the new "monster power" system you can increase the enemy health and damage they deal by up to 10 levels, if you want even more of a challenge.

Grinding has always been THE main factor of the Diablo series. I definitely agree though that it isn't as well done as in Diablo 2, because Blizzard chose to make D3 more linear so they could focus more on story and presentation. This came at a big price in terms of gameplay, however.

Regarding the loot system and auction house:
It really has gotten MUCH better. I had taken a rather long break from the game and within the first hour or two of playing again I found several new items for my chars and tons of stuff that I didn't need but I could sell off to the merchants (and some in the AH). That has netted me a considerable amount of gold. Prices in the AH have generally dropped a lot though, so if you were to go ahead and buy gear, you could get some awesome stuff for very little gold now.

It sucks you only have roughly 4 or 6 hours a week for gaming and I can imagine that spending them with grinding isn't very satisfying, but overall I think Diablo 3 is definitely worth checking out again and would recommend doing so, at least for a bit.

What I still don't get is, why you would prefer to play D3 on a console now. Is it, because you think it'll be more fun with a controller and in front of a TV or why is that? I'm pretty sure Blizzard will port the game well when it comes to controls and UI, but I don't think it would equal more fun.

Oh and, yes: having the option to play cross-platforms and import ones PC chars and all that would be great. Having options is always great, I think. But yeah, it won't happen. At least it doesn't seem so now.

I guess obviously since its not the PS4 its a mute point, but would the x86 basis of the new system make cross platforming easier? Seems like it would or am I talking out of my ass?

It makes putting the game on the platform easier, cross-play is a separate issue though it certainly isn't hindered by the similar hardware.
