The Elder Scrolls Online trailer reveals first gameplay

"Elder Scrolls Online... everything you need about it is right in the name: it's Elder Scrolls but it's online," creative director Paul Sage says in a 9-minute video showing off the first gameplay snippets from ZeniMax's MMORPG. And indeed it certainly does seem to be so. Our John was not pleased with what he saw of TESO at E3, but does this pique your interest?

The Elder Scrolls takes place a thousand years before Skyrim, roaming all over the series' lands. Topics covered in the video include the lack of distinct servers, having no weapon or armour restrictions, perks like pets and vampirism, and PvP siege warfare raging across Cyrodiil.

With nine minutes of chatter, clearly there is a little more to say than recognising its name.

The first game developed by ZeniMax Online Studios, The Elder Scrolls Online is slated for release on PC and Mac in 2013, published by Bethesda Softworks. The possibility of a release on future consoles hasn't been ruled out, but don't hold your breath.

The graphics look weaker than Skyrim to me. Definitely seems like all the models are lower poly and the characters looked pretty bland and cartoony, IMO.

elder scrolls and online breaks my brain. my absolute favorite thing about these games has always been the feeling of exploring a huge world alone, being that ultimate hero or villain and wandering the vast forests and dungeons with no one else.

i don't want parties, co-op, or group raids.

        +1 here.

The idea of Skyrim (even Fallout, too) is that you're the ultimate bad-ass out there, the chosen one, as it were, to fix the world's ills.

        This banding together nonsense sucks.

This, from Keefer's E3 look is all I need to know:

The graphics were flat, the combat system uninspiring and the general feel of the game had me thinking of vanilla World of Warcraft.

      I've played enough WoW.

That was half a year ago practically who knows what build they showed, just saying. As for "The graphics were flat" just look at the new vid it doesn't look flat at all, seems obvious they have progressed the game further from when it was first shown.

I love MMOs. I'm just having trouble accepting that this is a thing. It does look much more exciting since the last preview, but I doubt I'll pick it up unless they do something really unique for the genre.

Man I just want coop elder scrolls. Actually, I just want a coop roguelike that uses elder scroll's engine.

COOP roguelikes have never been done before, I think that this would be the next evolution of horde mode.

Yeah, I think all everybody has ever wanted was a co-op Elder Scrolls. Nobody asked for this.

I love the idea of Co-op roguelikes though... this sounds very interesting. What I would like to see is somewhat similar... I want a fully co-op Dragon's Dogma with up to 4 players. That would be amazing.

At least from an artistic and design perspective the game looks great. The environments especially are very impressive. The one thing which keeps me slightly curious about the game is that it sounds like they are trying to keep the combat more on the actiony side as opposed to the WoW style of combat. I probably wont play this game, but this video definitely leaves a better impression than anything they released so far.

I'm curious, but need to say way more before I'd say I'm interested.

And I can't help but wonder about monthly fees. If they're going that route, I think it's destined to fail, and I likely won't buy it.

But there's definitely some cool stuff there, and the player cooperation thing (which sounds like GW2) is definitely something I like to hear.

It looked pretty simple in all the shots, even compared to the regular ES games which aren't super engaging or dynamic, and those aren't even hindered by the client / server setup and latency an MMO brings with it.

Sit there and press a few buttons. No one was moving around or anything like that while attacking. If the combat is that static and boring, I really don't see myself playing it. Also, no first person?

I see nothing compelling or unique about this MMO. It reeks of blandness and doesn't even seem to take inspiration from the previous TES games. The standout achievement of those games was their realism and immersion. This has cartoonish characters, blocky environments, purple fog... It reminds me of World of Warcraft, not an Elder Scrolls game.
