The long-rumored redesigned PS3 is real. Sony took the stage at Tokyo Game Show to announce what many are calling the PS3 Super Slim. Half the size of the original PS3, and 25% smaller than the slim PS3, it will be available in North America next week, starting at $269 for a 250GB system. A larger 500GB model will be available for $299. Oddly, the starting price for the PS3 is now more expensive than it was previously ($249). However, that's because the system now includes a game. The 250GB model will include Uncharted 3: Game of the Year Edition and a voucher for $30 of "bonus digital content" for use in free-to-play MMO shooter DUST 514.

PS3 Super Slim includes Uncharted 3, DUST 514 content

The 500GB PS3 will also be available in a limited edition bundle on October 30th, which includes a copy of Assassin's Creed 3.

Andrew Yoon was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

So, it's basically ONLY smaller and doesn't do anything better or newer? Pointless.

smaller, generally means smaller components that generate less heat and use less electric, not pointless at all to improve on what all ready exists, and offer a better solution to consumers who might be purchasing one this Christmas.

You're dreaming. The point of these redesigns is only to make the product cheaper. They shrink the CPU process and probably most of the circuitry to reduce heat so they can spend less on coolers and PSU. We should be thankful there's still 2 USB ports. :)

Cant do that without risking compatibility with prior ps3 peripherals. Changing capabilities in console revisions is a big no no.

$199 would have seemed reasonable. This wouldn't seem like a good deal to me if I didn't have one and was in the market.

Would you be meaning the first party games, or games in general.

For the first one I could understand how someone might think that, but for the second....you would have to be off your rocker. I can't think of a single game that was a better port on the PS3 than on the 360.

I'm not saying there isn't one but the 360 has been the better platform for the vast majority of ports/cross platform games.

They don't redesign the system for people to upgrade.. they redesign the system so that it's cheaper for them to manufacture so their margins increase

because they will continue to sell for years after the new generation of consoles are released and Sony can make them more cheaply!

So for $30 more dollars I can get a new hotness console? I mean I know this comes with a game and already has an established library and player base for online play, but average consumers may not see that.

        September 19, 2012 2:17 AM

I think its a smart move. The price is dumb, but dumb people will buy it. And it will come along side the WiiU proving that the WiiU competition is still PS3 and 360 not the next gen.

          September 19, 2012 2:22 AM

I think it's independent of consumers.

This is a manufacturing thing. It's cheaper to produce the Super Slim, end of story. There's no benefit to the consumers aside from the smaller footprint (and a marginal electrical usage decrease, but who gives a shit about that?). This is purely to help Sony's bottom line.

And it's not a bad idea. I figure MS and Sony will announce their new systems next year for a 2015 release. This is a good way to further reduce costs and squeeze another couple of years revenue from the PS3.

            September 19, 2012 6:54 AM

I think 2015 is way too late for the new systems, sony & Ms are both under a lot of pressure from the rest of the industry to make a move. Sales are down and excitement is starting to slow to a crawl, they need the new systems at the latest early 2014.

But by now people relise that for a combination of a blu-ray play(top of the range BTW) and a console this has to be the best choice? PLUS where else can I get 20-30 games a year for £40? PSN+

Shit i've bought two, one up and one downstairs because it churns through anything I throw at it.

I won't need a super slim but for people with an old fatty, retire it to a blu-ray (plus old 40,60,80gb HD's) and get your game on with the super slim.

Yeah here's the thing about that. I just got one of those a couple months ago off craigslist. I was pretty stoked about the backwards compatibility.

Turns out that even when you play a PS or PS2 game in 480i on an SDTV, they lag like crazy. Gradius is unplayable, as I'm sure older wipeouts and fighting games are too. Totally unacceptable.

Because of that, I will eventually get one of these new slim guys and sell my BC model. No hurry though, the BC model will retain it's value ($200-250) and these super slims will eventually drop in price.

I assume this ridiculously loud fan from the 1st gen ps3 has been fixed in the later revisions of the ps3?
