Remember the Game Genie? Apparently, it's back. The "Game Genie: Save Editor" for PS3 has launched today, and it gives you the ability to insert "cheats" into select games by modifying their save data.

The Genie is a USB dongle that plugs into your PS3 system. By copying save data from your PS3, you'll be able to use the included software to edit the data via your PC. For example, you can start Uncharted 3 with max ammo and grenades, and unlock Crushing difficulty right from the get-go. Or, you can unlock all of Batman's upgrades in Arkham City. There are currently 67 games supported by the Genie.

The peripheral retails for about $30. Do note that modified save files will disable the ability to acquire trophies in some games. Also, the device won't be able to unlock any DLC, even if it's on-disc. Finally, Hyperkin is pledging to make sure cheats that affect online gameplay can't be utilized with the Game Genie. "We are making every effort to ensure that the cheats do not affect online gameplay, but we cannot make a guarantee that the cheats will not have some effect on online gameplay," the company details in a Q&A. "In the unlikely event that we do find cheats that affect online gameplay, we will make every attempt to block or prevent users from utilizing those cheats."

this stuff would get your console banned if they made it for 360 due to being able to cheese the achievements. i wonder if sony cares about the trophy cheesing and what their stance on the device is.

I was worried also until I read the article.

          Oh wait.. SOME games. :/

Also, I'm not sure about their stance on online cheating. Seems a bit wishy washy as to whether is can occur.

My guess is that this will only work with games where the developer has specifically granted support. It won't be like the old days of injecting variables in to memory, partially because that could be very dangerous on modern systems.

in regards to trophies, it's still a matter of whether sony takes them seriously. whether or not the developer gives a fuck, I know Microsoft is ferocious in regard to the integrity of their achievement points. if a developer says it's ok to give the character infinite life or hearts or whatever, making the player invincible, you can most likely just cheese a lot of the trophies in "some" games. i'm just curious how it's all handled and what sony thinks of it since i've followed what MS does and heard Major Nelson and co. talk about it on their podcast a lot.

Just what we need more cheats/hacks. Sigh. I can't believe something like this would have been added to the list of approved controllers/addons.

Yeah, this is going to ruin online play. Unlesssssssss... it's only useful for actual savedata, and not wallhacks.

This is awesome, however if it was anything but Game Genie it wouldn't be. I remember the days when devs use to leave cheat codes in the game for you to find.

Remember using the game genie for Mario Kart, and entering random codes to see what crazy / random stuff would happen? So awesome.

i spent so much time fucking with my snes/street fighter 2 and game genie . taking already known codes and changing them so very much/little. i ended up being able to do many of the things the hacked arcade versions did.
