Sega has announced it is closing various European offices as a result of its restructuring towards digital content. The company will be closing its offices in France, Germany, Spain, Australia, and Benelux, and instead partnering with various corporations to assist with distribution of packaged goods.

Starting July 1, Koch Media will handle distribution in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, and Spain, while Level03 Distribution and 5 Star Games will distribute across Benelux and Australia. London 2012 will still be distributed by Sega across Europe and Australia. The company did not detail the number of jobs impacted by the closures.

"Sega is entering a new and exciting phase that will position the company as a content led organisation maximising sales with strong and balanced IP such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Total War, Football Manager and the Aliens franchise," said Sega Europe COO Jurgen Post, in the announcement. "The company will benefit from a clear focus and realigned strategy for our digital business and packaged goods and we are confident that this will lead to a successful future."

Christ, they've been in such a nosedive since killing the Dreamcast. It's like they never quite got how to make great games without their own hardware. That and pissing away most of your amazing internal Japanese studios was pretty stupid...

It's just a damn shame that their decline began after making one of the coolest systems ever created!

It'll be intersting to see if Nintendo falls after the Wii U. No one will ever make a controller that you can play games on again.

You mean because of the Dreamcast's VMU thing? The curse of the controller with a screen?

It's nice to see PR spin at its largest! A shame that the media can not look beyond the confusion of the console division... the amusement European operation has been left unchanged!
