Nintendo has unveiled the identity of its secret 2D Mario game for 3DS. It's New Super Mario Bros 2. (Although it's technically the third game in the New Super Mario Bros franchise...) Once again, Tanooki suits are all the rage, as seen in the first screenshot for the upcoming sequel. It's unclear if the game will support multiplayer as in New Super Mario Bros Wii, but given the portable's smaller screen real estate, it seems unlikely.

Surprisingly, the game will be out less than one year after the release of Super Mario 3D Land. Expect it in August. With New Super Mario Bros 2 outed, one has to wonder--what is Super Mario 4?

Any excuse to yank out my 3DS is welcome, even more so when it's a retro Mario platformer!

Don't single out Nintendo. This comment applies to almost every other game announced and released.

It's the sort of game the DS/3DS does very well. I welcome games which play well to the platform rather than just shoehorn gimmicky stuff in there.

Is it technically the next game in the New SMB franchise? I wonder if Nintendo counts NSMB Wii as a separate series and will release NSMB Wii U or something.

I think they're turning the wii u game into SMB4 but I don't know that there will be enough to make it stand out from a visual and design perspective from NSMB2. As much as I know that 2D mario Sells like pancakes, I have to wonder if launching two separate 2d games for the holidays is the right choice. Will there be enough of a separation of both games to have someone justify buying both? Will design quality suffer in one or both games?

I would definitely buy both. I enjoy but have never finished 3D Mario games, but 2D ones? Can't get enough.

I'd buy both if the Wii one have 2D graphics like Rayman Origins instead of the ugly 3D graphics

I'll likely buy this on release day....loves me a good Mario platformer.

I typed this out on the touch keyboard on my Toshiba Thrive...so its probably full of spiders typos.

What if it had the goatse man instead of Mario and he at enemies with his anus.

On second thought...what if it had goatse instead of yoshi!?

      AAAAAWWWWWWYYYYYEEEAAAAAAHHHH!

Don't get me wrong, 3D Land was great, but my heart will always belong to the 2D Marios.

a new Super Mario "World" in a similar style and look of the original would be amazing!

With that chunky 16-bit esque Mario music that comes with the territory.

We interrupt this program for a special announcement:
“I will say one thing that I can say without getting in any trouble is that the launch lineup for the Wii U is going to surprise some people. It’s going to be pretty damn good.”

they say that with every Nintendo system.... then only the first set of games are good... then a bunch of crap titles follow for years until Nintendo advances a franchise
