Far Cry 3 shows off drug-fueled gameplay trailer

The first Far Cry 3 trailer has hit, showing our hero tripping on the drugs of Dr. Earnhardt.

18

We've seen plenty of Far Cry 3 in cinematic form and walkthroughs, but today Ubisoft released what it calls its "first gameplay trailer" -- a technicality at best, but we'll let it slide. This trailer guides you through a first meeting with a creepy doctor and his magic beans.

Dr. Earnhardt is the island's resident "pharmacist," which judging from the trailer means he's some mixture of a drug dealer and Morpheus from The Matrix. The trailer shows your hero tripping on some goofballs, observing the wildlife, and knifing fools. Full-on controlled substances should make this the next evolution in mass media freakouts. Get a sneak preview of the sensation non-gamers are sure to be outraged about below.

It's not true that they haven't shown the game in action before this. their website has an extended gameplay video where they guy emerges from under the waterfall and kills a bunch of guys and makes his way to the helicopter.

I agree. This game looks like it will be awesome. I've been holding back from buying some of the "big" FPS games like Rage, MW2, etc. because they just didn't "wow" me. This, however, does.

RAGE was actually a very good SP shooter after the patches (gunplay/responsiveness). Not very immersive storyline though.

The setting looks nice, but hard to say anything about the gameplay based on a bunch of 1 second clips. I'd love if it were more like FC1/Crysis than FC2. I just wasn't feeling the sandbox thing with that game, especially with the respawns.

I'm fairly certain they can get very close to Crysis quality, but run 5x faster.

          March 21, 2012 4:36 PM

I don't doubt the 5x faster, though having just loaded crisis on an ultra custom configuration I just don't see it coming close in technical terms. However the visual style is definitely different -more cartoony for sure.

This poor quality video of a game that isn't out yet and I will be running in a huge resolution on my PC has not met my expectations.

On a serious note, it's a yawnfest because the graphics 'got worse'? May I suggest you never sit behind a game with a good story, I am afraid for your well being .ka'boom :(

Have you played Far Cry 2 lately? It holds up fairly well (especially the landscapes) when you crank up the settings... but considering this video is of 360 footage... this will look way better.

It looks like they are trying to blend Far Cry1 and Far Cry 2 together... with (unfortunately) a bit of Call of Duty thrown in as well. The game looks interesting.. not sure about the drug mechanic though... not sure how that will add to the game. That's the kind of effect that could be cool for a few seconds.. then get annoying over time.

The way I see it, on the topic of a drug mechanic, if there has to be one.

Anything that ISN'T the drug mechanic from Far Cry 2 will be better :P

Uh-oh, a humvee with guards coming towards me, better hide! *cough* *cough* OH GOD MALARIA.

Despite that, Far Cry 2, game of the year 1908-2142

Yeah, it turns out that Malaria.... is not so much fun... even in games. I respect them for their bravery of putting it in there.. but it does get annoying. I said "does" because I just recently finally bought this game and I'm still in the middle of playing it right now.

This game looks cool... but it doesn't look too much like Far Cry 2. I watched the gameplay trailer on the official site and I just hope the quicktime events and all the cutscenes etc are just in the beginning of the game and after you get through that you can just play the game in a slightly less guided way. To me, that's what Far Cry is all about.

Please please PLEASE be open world...REALLY open world, not daft narrow passages and blockades a la Far Cry 2.

You know like, oh, what was that game called, umm, oh yes FAR CRY!

Go through the village kill everyone,
      go around, and snipe them
or swim out to sea, grab a passing boat, and just skip the whole fucking village altogether!

Every time you replay, it's a new game.

I don't know... I think Far Cry 2 was a bit more open then Far Cry. Are you sure you aren't confusing the two games? Far Cry gave you a very wide corridor to travel down but it was effectively linear. Far Cry 2 is like a whole simulated country where you can go wherever the hell you want.
