Hideo Kojima has been making games for a long time, and plans to continue making games for just as long. At a Q&A session to accompany the Smithsonian's "Art of Video Games" exhibit, Kojima said he has no plans to retire, and intends to keep creating for his whole life.
The event marked the 25th anniversary of the Metal Gear franchise, and the creator commented on what the next 25 years may bring. "I can say if I'm not dead by that time, I will still be making games," he said through a translator. "I don't have any intention to retire, so until the day I die, I will be making games."
It wouldn't be Kojima, though, if his somber comments on mortality and legacy weren't followed in the same breath by a touch of fun insanity. "Maybe by that time, technology will be so advanced that I can just make a game by myself using a bunch of robots," he joked. "Who knows?"
As for his legacy, he also mentioned that he doesn't want his name tied strictly to the Metal Gear franchise. "I don't have any problem with Kojima Productions being equated with Metal Gear," he said. "But I don't like, necessarily, that people think that my name equals Metal Gear. Of course, I've worked on Metal Gear up to now, and I love Metal Gear. But as a creator, I want to work on new projects and create new games. I want to do new, creative things -- things no one has done before. So even if I keep on producing Metal Gear, from now on, I want to have something else that I can do apart from Metal Gear. Something that pushes the boundaries, something that may not even sell, but something that's new."
Steve Watts posted a new article, Kojima to make games 'until the day I die'.
Hideo Kojima talks about what the next 25 years might bring for him, and how he wants his name associated with creations besides Metal Gear.
I would really like to see him do some sci-fi space opera type games that expand on ideas from Zone of Enders. He's really good at that kind of stuff. The current/near future setting for Metal Gear really seems to be holding him back in this regard where the ideas just come off as too far fetched and unbelievable.
And those games are going to be: Metal Gear Solid
