Fancy a top-down, squad-based action-RPG, mindful of the "hardcore PC audience," packing online co-op and potential permadeath, set in a post-apocalyptic Sweden? The newly-announced Krater, by Lead and Gold and Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 developer Fatshark, may be right up your street.

"We are proud to announce a game that has been on our minds for over 10 years. We have always been fans of the classic top down RPGs, and have wanted to make this game since we started out in the games business," Fatshark CEO Martin Wahlund said in the announcement.

Set in a city within a giant impact crater ("krater" being, as you well know, Swedish for "crater"), Krater promises the usual--enemies to defeat, loot to find and craft, levels to gain--as you probe the abyss. Daring players, or those who enjoy a challenge, can risk permanent injuries, and even death, in areas promising the finest loot.

Touting the joys of the "game as a service" model, executive producer Martin Wahlund said that Fatshark plans to "build on this world in the long run." PvP, for example, won't be in at launch, but "probably will be DLC later on."

Krater is slated for a downloadable release on PC via Steam in 2012. Check out the official site for more information, and the chance to become a tester.
