League of Legends 'Dominion' mode launches

Fancy LoLs in a jiffy? Dominion mode has now officially launched for League of Legends, offering twenty-minute rounds of capture & hold merriment.

If you need a LoL in a jiffy, help is at hand. Developer Riot Games today launched the new capture & hold Dominion mode for League of Legends, which aims to deliver shorter and more intense round of the free-to-play multiplayer tactical action-RPG.

For the past week, Riot had been testing the mode publicly by setting it live during off-peak hours, letting players have a bash early. And now we all can play, huzzah.

Dominion mode takes place on a new map, offering around twenty minutes of running around capturing control points and offing enemies. Riot explains a little more of how it all works in a new trailer accompanying the launch:

I thought it was a MOBA, now it's a MTARPG?

There's enough acronyms in your sentence to choke my horse. I seriously have no idea what those mean and I've been playing games for nigh on 23 years.

It means nothing, but people generally know what you're talking about when you refer to it.

Yeah but people have started to use it to refer to games that have nothing in common with dota other than the fact that it's a 5v5 game with classes. I am a conscientious objector to the term!

Yeah, which means precisely nothing. Look at each of those words individually; moba could literally refer to any online game ever.

But, I fully admit that I don't have a better name, so whatever! I just think moba is stupid.

That's true for every genre. Don't be goofy.

I respectfully disagree. I believe that most other genre names give some sort of clue as to the elements in the game. First Person Shooter obvious says a lot about the game, Real Time Strategy is much more generic but still at least tells you that it's a strategy game and then tells you which of the two major subgenres (real-time and turn-based) it is. Moba says nothing besides the fact that it's multiplayer, which pretty much every game ever is.

I like "Action RTS" better because it actually communicates some of the game style, but it's not great either. But Moba is probably here to stay because it has started to catch on.

I don't really understand how "battle arena" doesn't give you the idea that the gameplay probably involves battling in an arena. If anything, MOBA is one of the most literal genre titles. Maybe you should switch to railing against RPG. That one is meaningless, if foolishly taken literally.

Well yes okay you battle in an arena but can you think of any multiplayer game where you're not battling in an arena? Every FPS, RTS, TBS, etc are all "battling" in an "arena"

My problem with the name is that each word in the acronym is just way too generic. But again like I said it's not a huge complaint and I don't have anything better, I just really dislike the name.

I've been using Diablo more and more when explaining to people what dota-style games are. It works really well because everyone knows Diablo and they actually have a lot of similarities.

I'd say give it a shot first. The tutorial will teach you the very important basics. Then you can pick up the finer points and theory.

              two biggest things I think:
              1. get in the shack channel & play with shackers
              2. get on the shack TS ... it helps a lot, especially in dominion

Yes, absolutely! I only started playing 3 months ago and got really addicted (coming mainly from Starcraft 2 and Brink before). It's very polished and I still can't believe that my whole LoL experience is absolutely free.

And to top it all off the new Dominion mode is mad fun as well and the perfect way to blow off some steam if the normal mode is getting a bit repetitive.

        DO IT NOW!
