Games for Windows gets free Microsoft Points promotion

Microsoft is offering 400 free Microsoft Points ($5) to the first 2,500 purchasers of a Games for Windows title through the online marketplace.

Microsoft is adding a little extra incentive to the Games for Windows marketplace, with an offer of free Microsoft Points for purchases. From today through August 1, purchases from the Games for Windows marketplace will net you an e-mail code for 400 MSP (or $5 in human money).

In much tinier text, Microsoft outlines the fine print. The offer is good to the first 2,500 US residents, age 18 or over, who complete an online transaction. You can only get one code per person and it will be delivered within 4-6 weeks. If you're looking for quick points, this probably isn't the way to go. Plus, make sure you double-check that e-mail address, because the site warns that if the code bounces back as non-deliverable, it won't be re-sent.

But hey, if you're $5 short on an Xbox Live Arcade game and planning to buy a PC title anyway, it's hard to argue against the value of free points. A good place to start looking would be the Marketplace's "Bargain Games" section.

I think it would be nice if Gold members on LIVE got some incentives every once in a while. PSN Plus get a lot of freebies and heavy discounts on content and games. I don't think I can remember the last time Gold users had anything worth shouting about.

Gold members get Netflix and Hulu. I still can't believe you have to have gold for that. :\

Netflix and Hulu are only available to users in the U.S. I'm in the UK and none of that is available for us. Deal of the week is good don't get me wrong, but PSN Plus got given Burnout Paradise, Stacking and a bunch of other games for nothing. What happened to giving XBLA games out for free for a limited time, like Texas Hold Em? I'm not saying that they should do it all the time, just more frequently than never.

I'm not saying Netflix and Hulu are enough. I'm saying they shouldn't require Gold at all since they don't run on Microsoft's servers.

As far as good incentives for gold, I agree that there are none. Or at least not enough for the cost.

but you get to pay to play online.
        isn't that incentive enough?

In other news, this also is also in conjunction with not only the merging of XBox Live and GFWL accounts, but the marketplace as well. Meaning buh-bye to the black website that many called Microsoft's attempt at copycatting Steam.

They won't need that after they integrate it into Windows 8, and perhaps force GFWL users to upgrade to Windows 8 in order to play games on the relaunched GFWL service (or whatever it'll be named)
