German publisher gamingo announced that the space combat MMO Black Prophecy has opened for public beta testing in North America. It's been live since March 21 in Europe. Yanks can download it at the Black Prophecy site and start exploring the inky depths of space.

The game is developed by Reakktor Studios, and was originally set to hit last year. Today's announcement didn't come with a solid release date, but a beta has to mean they're inching closer. Check out the latest trailer below for a snippet of the story.

Last I tried it still had game breaking bugs. Specifically you couldn't get past the first or second tutorial mission. That was only a couple months ago, I think.

yea this was my experience as well. It looked nice but was extremely buggy and laggy.

I played it back maybe 4-6 months ago and I couldn't get past the bugs. I couldn't get to the part where you choose your faction.

If you guys like space sims, might want to check this out. I was in the closed beta and it had a lot of promise but too many bugs for me to get involved with.

I'm enjoying BP right now. The instanced quests are going to get old, I can tell that already, but the main storyline stuff seems pretty interesting. The faction stuff seems pretty cool too. I've been in testing for BP since closed alpha, but I really didn't get to play much at all before the latest phase, but everything seems much improved, from visuals to performance. The bugs are still cropping up, but it's still beta, they'll be fixed. Overall enjoying it.

If the registration process hasn't been drastically improved, I won't bother checking it out. It was one of the worst I've dealt with during the closed beta... we're talking "Anarchy Online at launch" bad.
