Weekend Discussion

Time to pack up and hit the airport today. It's been grand hanging out in New York. We have a ton of coverage coming your way soon, so make sure to check it all out.

In the meantime, here's what the Shack Staffers have been playing.

  • Garnett Lee: An amazing slate of NFL playoff games on tap this weekend promise to make me one happy football fan. I'll also be jamming on LittleBigPlanet 2 in anticipation of its release this coming week.
  • Alice O'Connor: I intend to spend the weekend in bed with a warm blanket, comfort food, stacks of books and litres of Lemsip until this flu goes away. I'll catch up on the current GOMtv StarCraft 2 season, at the very least, but I'm also hoping to play the Red Dead Redemption co-op missions.
  • Xav de Matos: Playing the, "I hope my plane doesn't get delayed!" game. When I land, it's time to put my "Go" bag and its contents through a wash, and get ready to hit Chicago next week. Looks like it's iPhone games for me! Hopefully, I'll get some DC Universe Online time in.
  • Jeff Mattas: I'm back on a Rock Band 3 kick, but I'm sure I'll also be tempted to replay some Dead Space to get ready for the sequel.
  • Steve Watts: I'll probably spend the weekend chipping away at Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. In fact, that game is so long it's probably what I'll be doing for several weekends to come. The Sly Cooper Collection is keeping me busy, and I might check out Green Hornet for some stupid fun.
  • Ozzie Mejia: I don't know how a Kingdom Hearts game released without me noticing, but it's on my radar now. I'll be starting up on KH: Re:coded.

re: using proprietary code in a mod there was this post which I thought made a couple good points

              @henryforprez:
Indie developers like Notch shouldn't take corporate standpoints.(Actually, nor should most regular developers.)
The added value of mods, maps, texture packs, etc. and the fact that there are people working on all this for free, should be enough reason for this.

And actually, the way Notch has been handling this so far is the best way. He said that he didn't approve of people redistributing his code(mainly SSP mods), but he didn't take any action against it. So, no legal problems for him, and a large free modding community adding value.

Now that he has a team and an active lawyer, he might think about arranging some things legally on a project by project basis. However, not taking any action against modders until the official modding support is up, is still his best bet. Losing all that added value right now would probably kill the game outright.

Yes and no. You pretty much cannot have a non-PvP server (at least, not one with any kind of public presence) without a number of mods.

again, that's for people who already own the game and want to play it a specific way. I don't think most people look at Minecraft and go "That game looks great but only if you can't PvP", PvP or PvE doesn't seem like the main draw of this game.

I think a lot of the draw is exploring and building stuff, especially with others. In it's current vanilla state, you really can't build a lot without it getting griefed all to hell.

you don't have to play multiplayer though, He was selling lots of licences even before he added SMP. I'm not trying to downplay mods because we all use them in multiplayer but the mods aren't what's selling the game, it's the gameplay. If, for whatever reason, they decide to kill all mods using notch code it's going to cause a backlash within the fanbase and probably cost some sales when the burned modders tell their friends not to buy it but people who have never played Minecraft are still going to see the game just as we all did when we started.

what sells the game is word of mouth. A lot of that comes from people who are already playing the game, and are exposed to mods and what they do for SMP. I don't think they can be discounted entirely when considering how the game sells

Agreed. But I think the modern who are just outraged are severely overestimating the impact they have on sales. We went through something similar months ago when some modern was super pissed for some reason and now I haven't even heard of him since then, I don't know if he's still around.

perfect example is KaBoomzzz where he is a raider and constantly hunts people instead of mining his own things. it's what keeps him in the game. mods are not needed. they provide crutches for players and admins.

First off, I lived through Doom and Quake in the sense that I was alive and less then ten years old when those games came out. Second, what does that have to do with anything? This isn't Doom/Quake, this is Minecraft and I doubt most people look at it and go "gee, I bet this game has cool modding but I don't care about the gameplay!" and I certainly don't think Minecraft would stop selling if all the modders quit in frustration.

When you have to respawn do you roam around like rambo (first blood), painting your face in mud, hiding in make shift lean-tos, setting up booby traps, frantically seeking spiders and chiken and flint for a quick advantage in weaponary? When cornered at a cliff 100 ft above a river do you dive in without abandon? And once you have picked your hunters clean of all their wares, do you come out in a firey bombastic blase of glory hoping to destroy the whole system that has made you the grotesque animal that you are today?

              you need a Rambo skin

"how long did it take you?" "Not too long. A couple of hours. A lot of that time was spent harvesting wood and stone and running back and forth between bases to gather more redstone... Those music blocks are freaking expensive to make in the long run. It also took quite some time to build new floors at the bottom of the mine. Once I figured out a system, the quickest part of the process was actually setting up all the inverters and redstone circuits."

lots of room for creativity in this game, but it's all wrapped up in a giant fetch quest :(

            January 15, 2011 9:04 PM

Yeah, I kinda wish redstone could be reworked so it wouldn't take up so much space. Maybe adding redstone work benches that act like custom circuit boards--so you can have one block be an XOR switch, instead of having some 3x5x2 cube of redstone and torches.

Going up with redstone is easy, it's going down that's hard. Going up you just need block, torch, block, torch, block, torch etc. and it inverts each level.

                  January 16, 2011 2:35 AM

down is easy too. block with a torch to the side, under it redstone on a block with a torch on it's side, etc.

It's hard to do either without lag though, thanks to all the inverters ;)
