              The default is set to PvP you mean

              pvp. True by default. If this is set to false, players can’t hurt other players.

                I don't really get the pvp thing - it seems like such a "helper" game - peopling your fellow crafter - moreso once monsters are in - hurting other players just seems weird.

            Player killing will be allowed (consensual). Building destruction forbidden.

            PVP will be enabled for a few hours, just so we can see if all this hubub we've been having for the last two days is even an issue. For all we know, pvp is flat out broken.

                  Personally, I don't see how PVP in a game like minecraft can be entertaining at all. I'm not a fan of PVP, but I love PVE.

                  I might start up a second server for PVP, and leave Mercserver as PVE. The problem with this is, I don't want to take away from m0rfus' userbase. I also get the feeling that EricZBA is quite excited at the prospect of taking over Mercserver, and I don't want to take anything away from him either. I also really, really don't want to run two servers.

                    Put it to a vote maybe? I can't see anything aside from a tiny niche wanting pvp - as we have lots of good games for killing eachother, but only this for whats special about it.

                    I agree, but for the same reason I don't advocate blowing up buildings indiscriminately, a temporary TNT and PVP server to let the server go out with a bang would be fun.

                    Long term I think PVE would be more fun, yes.

                        The other problem, which I just brought up on the mod list, is PVP + TNT is just asking for trouble. Players are going to be circling each other, dropping TNT in an attempt to kill each other. The world is going to be full of craters

                        We could do what I said before, which was use Leave Mercserver up with PVP/mobs enabled, but only condone PVP in a sanctioned area. I can wall off a HUGE area, so people can go in, build forts/castles/whatever. That way someone can go do PVP for a few hours if they want, then just go back to their normal houses and do some PVE. This upsets no one, it keeps our community together, and adds the functionality everyone wants.

                          Just to clarfiy once again, the PVP+TNT thing is just for fun as a temp thing during the server transition period. It'd be fun to blow up Duke City or the Sky Canal and attack others just for a couple days. Then when the reset happens, we'd use PVE or whatever's agreed upon.

                      Oh and my personal idea is to keep the current server around as "read-only" for people to browse historical monuments as it were. A new server would start out as PVE and be done with it.

                      The only worry I have with PVP enabled, are the amount of people going to want to grief other players. Would be terrible to have a rape-squad keep hunting you down and killing you over and over again for no reason while your trying to build fortifications against monsters or trying to build something fun and enjoyable for other people to enjoy.

                    I know it might not be possible in terms of hardware availability, but really, this is what you guys should do. Put the current world on a peaceful build server, so people can continue to admire and build more, and create a new world on the main server with full PvE.

                    I think you really need to reset the world once in a while to keep the user creativity fresh. Also, it teaches detachment from worldly desires. The ability to let go. Buddha would be proud of you guys.

      ACTUNG

      I need your input.

      This is my current thinking, and the direciton I'm leaning:

      Keeping MercServer. PVP/mobs enabled. PVP allowed only on a specific continent. The rest would of the world would essentially be PVE only.

      I need to know who lives on this continent, and if it's okay to be the PVP continent (if we do this): http://box.nevernet.com/~djr/mc/continent.jpg

      The reason I'm looking at this continent is because it's close to the mainland, it's quite large and looks relatively untouched.


      I want to keep our fantastic community together. We all know each other, we all help each other, and most important we all have fun together. Doing this dedicated PVP continent seems to be the best compromise so that everyone gets what they want, and we stay together.

        I have a hut on that island, don't care about it. Bob Shaftoe was there too, and someone who was trying to strip the continent (forgot his name).

        Sounds like a decent idea, although a server reset would have been cool. If we're keeping it, I'd advocate moving spawn north of that continent so the PVP people would have closer access and the rest of us could build northward.

            That works too, but I thought it'd be more convenient to have the spawn on the Northern border of the PVP continent. It'd be wide open for people to setup new construction or search for newly generated cool terrain.

            The downside is that you'd have to travel through the PVP continent to reach the old area, so maybe that's not the best idea.

        I like this idea, its a much larger playground to build fortifications and traps. PVP is also kept to a specific area which is nice. PeeVPee Island.

        I'm thinking that instead of walling off a huge area for PVP, how about just walling off the area around the spawn so that everything inside is the protected area and people can build anywhere outside of that and kill/destroy.

          It seems the poeple that want PVP are pretty small compared to the people that want PVE. We can always expand to the next continent over if demand grows.

          As it stands there's only like 10 people that want full blown PVP, and if we force those 10 people to a single continent, it brings them closer together, which means there's a higher chance of them getting some action

              ^^^^ this. I don't understand why all servers have to have everything on. In my eyes it's better for the community to be able to choose a server according to their preference. We should have

              1) a full PVP server
              2) a PvE only server
              3) a peaceful, 'build only' server

          Yes, the reset vote won. I'm willing to respect that. I just don't want to split the community up. If we reset, we lose people. If we go full PVP, we lose people. If we don't go PVP at all, we lose people.

          We've all gained a lot of friends here, and I don't want to see friends split up.

          I have gained a lot of friends here.

          For example Mami. He wants nothing to do with PVP or PVE, but we'll likely never talk again if we enable mobs, since he wouldn't come around anymore.

          MercFox1 and others want PVP, and would likely never come back if they couldn't kill people.

          Goblin/Arctic and others want PVE.

          You see the situation we're in here.. To me, the number one thing is keeping my friends together.

            Honestly, you can't keep everyone happy all the time.

            Can we not have multiple servers, even if it kind of breaks up the community (for now)? Remember that eventually he said he's adding portals between servers, so...eh.

            In my opinion 2 servers would be best.

            Leave MercFox as a builder server, with no PVP and no monsters. Personally I wouldn't really play on it much, since I'm not a builder, but it's still cool to see all the stuff people have built.

            Second would be a new server, with PVP and everything. This server might get reset whenever there is a big patch, since it's about exploring/PVP, and a periodic reset would breathe new life into it.

                        Towny, we were doing some testing with it, and I thought it added a neat level of organizational framework. On your render map, those towns could actually claim land, and have people be citizens of those towns or areas.

              The problem with leaving Merc as a builder server is that most, if not all of the mods would at the very least like PvE. In other words, the mods won't want to play on their own server :P

              To be honest, a lot more has come to light after the discussions we've had since that initial vote. New options have presented themselves. Also, we haven't even barely begun to see how the new update works.

              Also 80 votes of aproximately 250 players doesn't seem like the whole voice of a server.

              I'm beginning to sound whiney.

            Honestly I voted for a reset mainly because I don't feel like traveling for miles and miles to get to different biomes and to help reset the economy.

            I don't feel moving the spawn would fix the issue as that just creates 'The Great Quest' to find the old world and various supplies that are stockpiled.

            Let alone the other issues it creates.

            But yeah, you can't please everyone.

            I don't care what we do, except that if we *DO* have anything beyond a peaceful, mob free world, I'd only want to play in a full reset.

            If we're leaving shit as is and just adding monsters and PVP, I'm fine with playing on another server.

              The new server is up, scroll down. It's a new fresh world.

              Initially we were just using this world to see how PVP worked, and what was broken etc. But the natives have started building already, so whether or not we KEEP this world is still up in the air.

              Either way, log in and run like hell from the mobs.

              Those of us who've been on the server awhile also know that Merc said there would be a reset once mobs were added in (this was before player damage was removed). All the duped items would be removed this way, creating a more level PvP playing field.

      Is there anything useful in the Hell world right now? I finally made a portal in SP and went down there. The pigmen zerged me a few times, but other then that is there anything to do there? BTW, the pigmen sounds are fantastic and demented.

      since we are brainstorming: resurrect the test server. Have that PvP and buildings fair game. Reset it from the main server once a day. Would be like valhalla.

      People could build forts in the main server then go into test and see what holds up. Maybe just do that temporarily until we see what PvP is like.

      Foo's designated PvP continent is probably the best compromise, but hey, brainstorm

        I've considered floating this idea to the mods in past. The reason I didn't is it's pretty easy to imagine people griefing on the real server and then claiming that they thought they were on the Valhalla server.

        Just to add to this, the people that are afraid of having your towns/structures destroyed:

        Towny allows you to set a town in a way that members that are not a part of your town have no modification rights to your town. So they can't hack up your buildings.

      Okay, so let's see what's happening so far:

      * Monsters spawns are based on your CLIENT settings still, apparently.
      * Other players can't see monsters you see, but they sure can be damaged by them
      * Arrows are nearly worthless as they rarely detect a hit.
      * invisible creepers will blow up all your nice things.
      * If you die in front of another player, you explode in a shower of [stuff] but you don't "die". Instead you're left with one heart, and you're now invisible to other players/monsters.
      * Once you're "undead" there's no way to respawn. Even restarting the server doesn't fix it.

            I think his ego might be too big to ever admit he is not keeping up with the increased urgency that comes with a worldwide audience invested in your project. His anger at people fixing problems in 3rd party mods is telling... but, of course, he is also not above mentioning that he will eventually rip off those same implementations even though he disapproves of them. :)

                Yeah, I'd be angry with that too, but I thought I also heard people say he rejects code fixes from people who voluntarily submit them to him. I'm sure there are plenty of security concerns that have to be accounted for, but if I was Notch, I wouldn't turn away free help if all they want is a credit in a blog post that they helped correct an issue.

                Best thing he could do is totally throw out the notion of a serverless singleplayer. Have singleplayer just connect to a local server so that Minecraft is always server-client regardless of SP vs MP. Then there's only one codepath whereas now he's got two

            Yeah. On my server, what didnt work was llamacraft latest update. Lava now flows and burns woods, so everything is burning down. I hope its a problem superllama will fix. I dont think we will survive with burning lava....

      God this sounds some a complete cluster fuck of an update... I wanted to move to PvE but it sounds completely broken. I'm not surprised really... I think I'll be keeping monsters turned off until things get playable.

      No sense in turning all this on with all the bugs that are present

          Might be a better option to just backup the current world, put a new world on the server for the next week or two until things get playable. Then put back the world in place.

          So basically we'd just have a playground were anything goes for a little bit until it get fixed.

            Yeah, that's what I do now for my personal server. I make a world backup before I install any new patches because I'm always freaked out by some of the crazy bug reports I've been hearing the last few weeks. That way I could always "skip" a patch and restart the world with the next patch if the current patch messes things up too badly.

            Thankfully nothing up to this point has been a showstopper bug for me. We'll see how it plays out tonight though after I patch. :)

      Invisible monsters: People are saying this has to do with the client-side difficulty setting. Seems on lower difficulties, the game is trying to make monsters invisible to you without actually removing them. I pray this isn't how Notch is actually doing this in the single player mode, but on the server, you can "fix" this by raising your difficulty to at least Hard, so all the monsters are visible to you.

      Please note: I haven't tried this myself yet. Anyone know if it definitely works?

          But not *all* of the mobs on the server I think is the key issue. It sounds like the difficulty slider "hides" some of the spawned monsters in order to create the illusion of variable difficulty, as opposed to the standard "lets just not spawn so many monsters" algorithm, uh, "normal" programmers employ. :)

              I'm not sure how you would approach it logically. Could someone else's creeper blow up your placed blocks if you have have peaceful settings toggled? How about the landscape around your blocks?

        Yes, this seems to be the case. On peaceful, you cannot see any monsters, but on easy/normal/hard you can. I've been playing on Hard and haven't come across any invisible monsters.

        I was on peaceful and didn't see any dangerous mobs until I set it to hard. Died twice to invisible monsters while on peaceful.

          It's likely a bug that won't get fixed for months. You know how when you first log in, the game spawns you before the world has loaded, so you fall? Yeah, that's what the problem is. Apparently this is only going to happen the first time you log in, though. Notch apparently modified the player data files to save your height and hold you there until the world has loaded, but it only happens after you've logged in at least once.

        It depends on how long it takes for the map to load, as the momentum you get from fall is carried over when the map does finally load.

      Ok... as PvE is pretty broken Mobs are OFF right now. Once Notch gets things working properly. Basically no invisible monsters and the death/respawn glitches worked out. I'm turning on Mobs so get your shit ready as you'll be fighting off mobs soon enough!!
